I'm starting a job in a few days, now I wsa told I had the job back in May. They sent letters out to my references but apparently neither one replied. They then contacted me to say they would be resending the letters and would I contact the references to tell them the letters were beong sent again. What i want to know is since the job is already mine and I'm starting soon will the fact that the references haven't replied cause me any hassle, could they say that I can't start because the referees haven't replied?

    Letter writing? How quaint. :)

TBH, I would be a bit paranoid about not having the references sorted.

Any time I have asked people to give me references, they have always been verbal. With companies becoming increasingly paranoid about litigation, I would be surprised if anyone will go on the record by providing a written reference these days. That coupled with the fact it is a pain in the arse to put together a written reference.

It's a previous employer(bar trade) and a college lecturer. The hospital where I got the new jobs wants the written references.

Most companies offer you the job "subject to reference check". If you check the details on your job i would guess that is what you have been offered. Therefore no reference=no job.

Have you any idea why your referees haven't replied? Do you have phone numbers for them so you can call them and explain the situation?

In my current company and in my previous company if we couldn't get a reference the job offer would be revoked as the company would presume there is something wrong.

Neither replied so I phoned and apparently neither received any comunication from the hospital, so I got them to confirm their addresses and the letters were resent and should arrive on Monday, I start Monday week and the hospital didn't say anything about the references holding up my start date.
