Video compression (for DV Cam)

I just bought a Panasonic miniDV camcorder. The software it comes with can transfer its video, uncompressed over USB2, and save it as either MPEG1, DV-compressed AVI, or ASF.

I'd like to investigate other compression options. Firstly a relatively high quality one for archiving (to DVD), but also a high compression one for sharing.

I presume some sort of MPEG4 based thing would be appropriate, but I don't have much experience in this area. Does anyone have any advice, suggestions or recommendations?

H.264 seems to be the best compact option. DVD as you said is the most versatile for sharing/homeplay. Also even though it may state uncompressed, DV has it's own integrated compression that is used as you record, so when you transfer keep it as a DV-AVI.
