those of you newbies who like using MS Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird locally on your pc rather than the web based (but quite good) iPlanet Messenger Express can do so with the following settings:

    account name: your connect login
    password: your connect password
    protocol: IMAP
    server (students): studentmail.ucd.ie
    server (staff) - see below!

sending will be a bit of a bother. if you're not within ucd use your ISP's smtp server. if you're in ucd you'll need to plug into the wired network and use

    mail.ucd.ie

truckle/hullaballoo: feel free to sticky or maybe delete and move to the wiki page if you see fit

Just to correct one thing above: The UCD outgoing mail server (SMTP) is actually mail.ucd.ie and not smtp.ucd.ie as stated above.

Also when configuring the incoming mail server (IMAP) choose the SSL option so that it connects to port 993.

If you're a postgrad and have a firstname.lastname@ucd.ie address then the incoming mail server is staffmail.ucd.ie
