Does my Sipura ATA (2100) have to be next in series with my cable modem?

Reason I ask is my NTL 6meg connection has been shocking lately and when I ,finally, got through to somebody who could suggest more than just turning it all off and back on again they asked me to take the ATA out of the equation and the speeds went from less than 1 meg to over 5 megs. Last time I was in PC World they had the Netgear wrtg54gs for ~€60, cheaper than Komplett or Elara. So I'm thinking of getting one and having:

NTL -> Router -> PC on one port of the router and ATA on another.

Any reason why this shouldn't work?
