Okay so my Dell Latitude LCD gave up about 2 weeks ago. It costs €500-600 to replace so basically I need a new laptop.

The Macbook looks like the way to go but as a windows user I am nervous about taking the plunge.

So on www.apple.ie using the education discount I can get a Macbook with the following specs for €1192.50

    1.83 Ghz Dual Core
    80GB HD
    1GB RAM
    CD/DVD combo drive
    and rest is the usual

This seems like a very good price considering how light the macbook is. I want to be able to bring this in and out of college.

I'll be using this for general crap like browsing the web, downloading using bit torrent, listening and ripping music, a bit of C programming, watching movies. I do quite a bit of multi tasking so that's why I'm going for the extra RAM.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Why buy a mac if you like windows.....the whole point of a mac is really to use Mac OsX but if your going installing windows onto it then I personally dont see much point.Dont get me wrong I use both windows on my main machine and have a mac mini here too whcih I also love to bits because its so different to what I'm used to...but if push came to shove I'd take windows first. So if I were you I'd conisder is it worth buying a Mactop or would you be better getting a windows based laptop from say oh I don't know......dell?

dell are more expensive for an equivalent laptop. This macbook is light and portable. That's what I need. I had a go of mac os when I was away this summer and really want to try it again. I just wanna know if there is any reason other than the windows issue why I shouldn't buy a macbook?

    Better battery life FTW! :D
And don't install Windoze on it -- OSX can handle all the programs you listed.

If you look around you can find a dell notebook with equivilent specs for the same price easily.

Did you even look at DELL? A quick look shows a 6400 with a 1.73Ghz Core duo, dvd-rw, 1gig of ram, 120gig HD and a 15.4 WXGA Widescreen for a mere 979 - where you got that dell are more expensive then a MAC I don't know! The 6400 is fairly portable too.

Not saying you shouldn't get a MAC but you shouldn't dismiss dell without even checking them first.

There's also a 6400 that beats the pants off that Mac for 1249 - so for about 70 quid more then your price you could get a 2Ghz Core Duo, 2Gigs of Ram, 120GB Hd ;)

the dell 6400 is over 3kg at that spec....the mac is 2.36kg, I'll be cycling in and out of college with this laptop so weight matters.

you can't find anything as portable as the mac for the same price, let me tell you i've been looking!

Guess it depends on what you want, but for .7kg of a difference I know I'd go for the Dell which is literally twice the machine the mac is for literally a mere extra 50 euro...Macs price to performance ratio is never good and especially if you are going to be just using windows on it....

    They look nice though...

Philips (X Series) and Sony also offer some extremely light laptops, not too clued up on them myself though to be honest.

Don't forget to check out www.dell.ie/outlet - Pick up a decent spec lappy for even less.

    There's a 14" Inspiron 640m - Weighs 2.5 kgs. Core Duo, 1GB, 100GB for about a grand. (770 + VAT/Del)

    Always worth a look.

  • If you're basing it on weight, take a look at this.

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=321204

    absolutely tiny at 1.1kg..

Could do with another bit of ram, but if portability is the issue, i say take it!
