Dont see why your HDd wont work on the new motherboard, its should at least load into the operating system! Have you tried getting into safe mode( im assuming you are using windows)!???

What error message are you getting when Windows is meant to be loading?

It would seem that the asrock, and the asus boards use two different chipsets. prolly nforce and via. one will not load the others chipset drivers. Have you tried booting into safe mode ? if you can boot that way uninstall the old ones, and install the new ones, but this is not guarenteed to work.

Best thing you can do is do a fresh install of windows. Dont bother with a repair install, it will cause more griefe then you want.

If your using Windows XP then it has this handy dandy feature which records your hardware profile when its initially installed, it basically gives you 3 hardware changes from its initial setup - after that it will give you a reactivation screen (supposedly). I say supposedly, as every time I've done this Windows just boot loops or sticks; thus causing a rebuild and a headache

Also if the copy of Windows was an OEM copy (one that came with the original PC) then chances are it uses the BIOS make to determine if your fiddling the system and wont load as a result or just wont accept any activation code you throw at it. :D

ive tried safe mode, but it just loops back to the bios.....i really want to avoid reinstalling windows if at all possible!!!

if i stick the hdd into another computer and just delete the via drivers would this work??

Doubt in very much. I think your best option would be a reinstall of windows. (clean if at all possible)

All I can really suggest is to back up all the data worth keeping and clean install as nuttz suggested, windows is a fickle foe when it wants to be, especially round the whole hardware swapping malarky.

Changing motherboards (especially if it is a different chipset) & preserving the windows install can be a tricky affair the easiest guide I know of to follow was this but before swapping the motherboard, basically you changed the system specific drivers to neutral ones. Now change mobo, Windows boots on neutral drivers, install new chipset drivers - back in business.

Unfortunately your mobo is already dead so you can't do that, if you were technically proficient there is a means to switch the system specific drivers to neutral ones using BartsPE builder, registry editor and bootable CD's but it is not for the faint hearted. See this post & then this post.

I think the best thing you can do is use the repair feature on the XP install CD to get the OS back up & running without completely wiping it out.

A visual guide here will show you how to initate the repair procedure, scroll down to the bottom of the page to the section titled How to Repair Install: ***Also removes Service Packs***

What kind of motherboard did you buy name & model number ? also what other parts are in the computer as once the repair is complete we can point you to the correct drivers.
