Old $ky dodgybox not used for a while

Moved into the new place the other day and lo and behold found an old $ky dodgybox (with card) in a cupboard

Hooked it up and all seems to work ok apart from two bugs

    1) Channels 4 and 5 give an "04 this viewing card is not authorised call your broadcaster for assistance"
    2) When switched on channel 101 is BBC Radio One. To get BBC1 TV I have to go up into the 200's and then tune downwards. When I do this BBC1 NI appears on 101

    I presume if
    1) I leave the box tuned to 104 for long enough Channels 4 (and 5) will reappear
    2) The other bug is due to old software on the box and if I leave it on long enough it will do a software update automatically without me having to force it

Am I correct in these assumptions ?

What is the best channel (if any) to leave the box tuned to for software updates

Plenty of other experts about here to advise you but I managed to restore an old box with a reboot.

    unplug.
hold the box's backup button and keep it pressed.
    plug back in again

(or at least I should say Tony showed me how to do it)

You could force an upgrade, I can't remember how, but it is all out there on that interwebnet thing.

As for Channel 4 & 5, well I suppose it depends on whether it is an Irish or UK card. Leave the card in over night and see what happens.

If it has "This card is not authourised message" well it has either been swithched off or it was never turned on. I would guess the latter. Only way to sort it now is if you know somebody with a dialler or if you are up the north, connect the box to a phoneline and do an activation through the installers menu.

Im pretty sure its an NI card

The house is in NI and the UK channels are 101-105 on the EPG (RTE's are on 175 ish) It seems to be an ex-sub card (Sky 1 and Living were in the favorites list) and it is the dark blue type faffing around with phoneline will have to wait until I can find a long enough cable

Also does anyone know the correct remote code for an Akura TV (cheap supermarket 28" widescreen) the book says 0042 but that doesnt work.

The instructions on Sky interactive are not much use (white writing on a yellow background is hard to read  )

Whatever region of ITV on 103 you have will give you the region of the card. Mind you if its not activated it will probably just be ITV London.

As for your remote code. Here you go.

    Akura 0042 246, 292, 065, 440, 311, 199, 310, 387, 397, 521, 037, 304

Instructions on the 3 digit method can be found here

    Thanks guys

065 did the trick for the TV

Still waiting on Ch 4 (BBC NI and UTV regions come up on 101-103)

    Forced update currently in progress

I have an old panny box.
It missed a fair few updates and now is a brick in terms of how it will work.
Firstly it wont read the new yellow house cards.
Secondly, if you try a forced update it wont work.
Thirdly, it tries to auto update and as a result fcuks itself up and crashes.
Fourthly, it wont recognize the new categories and its still the old blue banner epg.

Describe the "not working" manual update in detail and how you do it.

It could be the 22kHz panisonic bug preventing reliable reception below 11.7GHz

Hmmmm Left it on Ch 4 overnight and it was still giving that damn "04 this viewing card is not authorised......." message this morning

    Its a panasonic box

    ADDS: Looking at http://www.uk-satellite-tv.co.uk/skycardsinfo_64999.html
The card has either not yet been switched on by Sky (ie it's a new viewing card) or, if you were using it previously and everything was OK, Sky have now decided to shut it down. They will do this if they know that the card is being used abroad (many people phone Sky from abroad, not realising that Sky are oblidged to shut down any viewing cards used outside the UK/Ireland). It may also be shut down if it previously belonged to someone else and Sky are aware that you are using it.

Looks like Im going to have to get a new card :(

Well, the update screen will flash on/off a fair few times before its finished.
Not to mention a few channels loosing reception every now and again.

Hmm sounds like the Panasonic 22Khz problem look it up:

    http://www.satcure.co.uk/digirep.htm

(They do a filter that cures the problem. The 22Khz problem is PSU noise falsely triggering the LNB. A different LNB may work. Some people see the problem only after changing to a new LNB.)

Scroll down to picture below on
    http://www.satcure.co.uk/panasonic.htm

    filter_pic2.jpg

    Also

    Scroll down a bit:
    6. Some channels missing (+ other symptoms)

    a) The first thing to check is the software version. Press [services] [4] [5].

    * Operating System Version = 1.2S4FE
    * EPG Software Version = 3.4.4b

Note: these versions were correct for a Panasonic TU-DSB40 on 5/3/06.

I'll try to remember to update them when they change again but, if you see that I haven't, please send me an email to remind me! Mention this page http://www.satcure.co.uk/digirep.htm. Note that the numbers may vary slightly from time to time, dependent on your Digibox make and model. DO state your make and model from the label.

If your software is out of date then your Digibox may ignore the viewing card. Other strange symptoms may occur.

    b) If "some channels are missing" please make yourself a comprehensive list of precisely which ones are missing. Then look at the listings on, for example, the www.lyngsat.com web site to determine whether these programmes have anything in common. You should list the frequency, the polarisation (H or V) and the band (22kHz is automatically on for high band or off for low band).
