    Hey all,

I'm trying do a ram upgrade on an old dell machine...its about 5 years old.

It takes SDRAM. I'm trying to put 512mb of PC133 SDRAM into it but it won't take it.

Do I need to buy specific Dell ram or whats the story? I tried the RAM in a generic PC and it works fine....tried it in 2 different DELLs but no joy!!

What model is your dell? Afaik it should work, is it the only the one stick of 512 that you are trying to put in there or is there already some there?

There's currently 2 64mb sticks and I'm taking one out and replacing it.

I've tried taking it all out and then having the 512 on its own but still no joy.

    Its an Optiplex GX100

Well I googled around and found out that your Dell takes PC100 ram (2x256 is all they have available it looks like to make up the maximum 512mb that the motherboard can handle). Afaik you can mix and match PC100 and PC133 but the system won't take advantage of the extra speed.
