There's two near Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. Saw them about three weeks back

I had a loan of one for about six weeks, a serious head turner but nothing special at the end of the day. They used to mop fuel and eat tyres.:)

Ha, I know the guy selling them, I'm from Carrigallen. Thought he had got rid of them a long time ago, he used to take one out on a sunday.

It was on a Sunday as it happened. One was parked outside Centra, went round the corner and there was the second one heading out past the GAA pitch...thought I was going mad for a minute!
I'd seen one in C'allen before and had also seen it in Drumlish (well, I'd always assumed it was the same one!)

there's a few of them about and you generally see them in convoy heading for shows!

They have to be the ultimate head turner... but perhaps only the 70's & 80's generation know why :-(

I also like the De Lorean DMC12!
It is on my 'cars I intend to own' list ;)

(I even have a pic of myself standing beside the 'Back To The Future' DMC12 in Universal Studios in L.A. ....and I did the DeLorean ride there too! :))

The latest edition of 'Classics Monthly' (or is it 'Classics'?) has a 3-4 page feature on the DMC 12......incl pics of the Dunmurry 2001 event.

Incidentially, there is a N.I.- registered Red DeLorean in the Museum Of Irish Transport in Killarney, Co. Kerry.

I also tend to collect any articles I see re the DeLorean (e.g. a newspaper cutting about a 25-yr old who lives in Kildare and bought his very own DeLorean!)

There were plenty of them at Terenure this year. Very, very poor cars but also very, very fascinating.

Weird! I just read 2 minutes ago that the guy they have for JonBenet Ramsey's murder drives a red DMC12.
Didn't know they did them in colours. I would LOVE one.

On the subject of colour, I know most were done in brushed steel but how is the finish maintained, with a wash and wax? a sander? How do you keep the finish in tip top condition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

It's steel, you don't need to keep it in tip top condition :D A friend of mine has one in Cork, and another in Connemara.

You can paint them too, I've seen loads of them all different colours especially in the US. There's a red one in the transport museum in Killarney. A lot of the ones that are painted were damaged so the easiest solution is to paint them after repairs.

I was talking to a guy at the Trim show with one (there was probably a dozen of them there), decent ones changes hand for 25K or so. He's was a lot less but need a good bit of restoring.
The bodywork is usually soild, its the 'Y' chassis members the rot quickly. The engine is basically a Renault V6 with no problems getting spares.
Keeping the bodywork clean is a pain in the ass, especially after going to a show. Handprints and finger marks stick to the metal, he said he usually has to wash the car down in white spirit to clean it !!

I really to like them but am afraid I'd get bored quickly and I doubt they're as chuckable as my Alfa around the twisty stuff :)

I heard of a gold plated one somewhere near the Persian Gulf. Did I dream that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    No, you weren't dreaming!

There is a gold-plated/coloured DMC12 around (possibly a couple of them).
It is shown on the DeLorean websites.

I remember hearing of a stash of them and some other very valuable cars buried in the desert somewhere...did anyone else hear of this or am I dreaming too?:)

I'm loading the landrover as we speak.:D

Sounds like a treasure hunt... great. May be we/you get caught in a time warp sand strom that takes you forward to the past... :) so as to find them BEFORE the gold plating has been removed by sand blasting...

There is one regularly parked in the Dublin Fruit and Vegetable market at around 5am. It's usually in Little Green Street or Little Britain Street. One of the directors of one of the companies there owns it. I must take a pic the next time I'm in there.

Yes I know dubtom, but it looks kind of odd among all the trucks, forklifts and surrounded by pallets of fruit.

seen that delorean there a few times, but i think it never moves, its always in the same spot.
it dos look weird in among the boxs of fruit & veg.
if i owned it i wouldent leave it there, have you seen the way they drive those forklifts

It moves around alright. I've seen it parked near Keeling's gate and around the corner near McManus's.

Yes, I certainly wouldn't like to leave any car there especially around 5 and 6am when the place is mental. It's bad enough trying to watch your truck/van. A few of the company directors have nice (non classic) cars there also. They never seemed to get damaged even though most of the lads in the forklifts don't seem to care about what they hit.
