    Hi Guys,

Could use a hand getting my very troublesome laptop back into working order...

Currently has mandriva linux le 2005 running on it but want to use this as a faminly internet point and as such need windows put back on it.

Usually wouldnt be a problem however when I put in the XP cd and try boot from the CD the laptop just skips it as if its not there and goes straight into booting up the linux. I may be missing something simple but this laptops been driving me crazy for the past year just sitting up not being used. Would like to get it sorted now and apppreciate any help or enlightenment that may be shared!

If anyone can help id be really grateful!

    Thanks

You need to change the boot sequence, press f2 (normally f2 but might be f1, f10 or f12, see the post screen when machine starts) to enter the bios and change the boot sequence to boot from cd before HD (IMO it should always be this way) and then exit saving changes then put cd in and reboot, should boot from the cd or at least give you the option to do so.

BTW Why do you think you have to put Windoze back on? Mandriva is perfect for the non technical Linux user, might get the family off the M$ Drug$

That is the way it is currently set to boot, which is why im wondering what is up with it... The cd itself works as ive tried it in this pc.

Reason I need windows on is because its an awkward advent laptop and on windows was the only way I had it connected to the net, wont connect on mandriva for some reason!

Ask a daft question but is it an upgrade CD or a full blown copy of windows?

Only reason I ask is due to the fact that the upgrade CD doesn't contain any boot files...:(

Does the CD even attempt to spin when on boot up?

I would suggest you try this if all else fails : Windows 98 Boot Disk

Everything seems to work when you try this method - comes with all the handy dandy features such as FDISK and FORMAT etc, then you should be able to install windows this way
