    Hi All,

My laptop (windows XP SP1) does not recognise my digital camera anymore.

Basically when camera is plugged in via USB - it wont appear in my computer.

Have removed it from device manager and then plugged camera back in - will now appear in my computer when i try to get pictures from it I get the message - please ensure device is properly connected and turned on.

Have tried updating drivers, repairing the kodak software that is installed, removing s/ware and installing again - really have no idea wht the problem is - searching the web cant find any other info other then what ive tried already.

    can anyone help ??

Your not going to thank me for this but get Service pack 2 on the machine. It is almost a re-build of XP. It might solve the problem. If you approach any of the technical support options available to you i.e. the camera manufacturer's website or Microsoft that will be their first suggestion.

I agree with Martin, but the fact that it was working fine under SP1 means that the problem is not SP2 related. But it's no harm from a security point of view to update to SP2.

You took the right step in removing the camera in Device Manager. What I would also do if you have not done so already is to remove all the USB controllers. Then restart PC to reinstall them. Then try connecting camera.

If you're still experiencing probs my guess is that the usb connection on the camera has become borked. But try using a different usb cable and usb port to rule out them being the source.

cheers for the responce guys - Yeah tried both microsoft and kodak websites - cant find what im looking for - just all basic suff like - is the camera turned on, check cables are connected - cables are fine yes is powered on !

Ive tried with two different usb cables with same result - also tried two different cameras - both same problem with this laptop.

RE: removing USB controllers - how do I know which one is the correct one to remove? when expanded it doesnt specify which on is related to the camera - can they all be removed? would this effect other peripherals i attach via USB??

re SP2 - yeah have been meaning to get around to that ! might just go for XP professional. we'll see. Have to get this camera working again first

Well if you've tried 2 different cameras with same result it points towards a problem with laptop and it's usb ports.

It's safe to remove everything listed under the USB grouping. They will all reinstall as you restart. Just disconnect any USB devices attached before you do so.

Also, do other usb devices experience connection problems?

No - MP3 player\scanner\usb key all working fine, When digital cameras are connected windows seems to recognise its there (usb device detected appears in bottom Right of taskbar) but just cant get windows to recognise and get pictures from the camera

cheers for your help so far

Well you have tried everything that I could think off already but it at this stage it would be worth trying installing SP2 as SP2 updated the USB sub-system in XP and fixed some outstanding bugs in relation to USB 1 devices as well.

You never know some update or something installed recently could have conflicted with the device as everything is now tested against XP SP2.

What make chipset is in the laptop, Intel ?

thanks for the reply 8T8 -

mmm looking like I will have to get SP2 then. will get on it at the weekend
