Hey people, Hope I'm in the right area here :/

need major help. got this cd-rw from pixmania the other day

    http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/157086/art/lg/lg-gce-8527b-cd-rw-drive.html

and the problem is that i don't know how to get it going. I recieved a nero installation cd with it, but that's it. Now I'm generally good with these things but i'm blind here. I have the cd-rw drive put in place, have it hooked up grand but it aint even allowing me to access it. I doesn't show up in my computer, my take is that it's in place properly but the pc doesn't know it's there.

    Any help would be appreciated
    Regards,
    Joe

    Does the LED flash?
Does hte drive make any noise?
    What Operating System?
    What system spec's?
Assuming Windows: Check in the Device manager, under CD/DVD, whether it's listed. (Start->Control Panel->System->(Hardware->)Device Manager)
If it's not, reboot and tap (F1 or F2, or Del usually) the key to enter BIOS/Setup. And check what is listed (under IDE adaptors usually)

It should be in the Comp/Tech forum. A mod will move it later.

Is the LED showing on the CDRW at all?

Have you got the jumpers set correctly? i.e. Set it to master or slave. If there is another device on the same cable set as master, then the drive has to be set as slave. Alternatively you can set jumper on both devices to cable select and it will work regardless of where on the cable you place it.

This will give you some more info.

all above first and if so

do you have alcohol or any other virtual drives installed, probably slave master thing...but even with that you can still open the drive so maybe not....

The led shows up when I press to open, it makes absolutely no noise until I go to open it so it's obvious my computer knows nothing about it.

Thanks for all the feedback, it's a pain having this and it won't work yet..

I would take the jumper setting as being the first point of call - that can usually throw an almighty spanner in the works if setup incorrectly; trust me I learnt that the hard way! ;)

If that doesn't work another quick thing to have a ganders at would be the IDE cable; there is a red line that runs along the last wire of the IDE cable, this should be next to the red cable on your molex connector. This just ensures you got it the right way round (again experience!)

Good luck and hope you get it up and running PDQ! :)

Try switching it to the slave drive on the Primary IDE (same cable as hard drive) and see if theres any difference, is it showing up in the BIOS menu?

What annoys me is that I literall took out a working cd drive and put this in place? I'll take a look again and post later....

When you switch your computer on you will usually get a message on screen saying "Press F1 to enter setup" (Note it can be a different key such as "Del" or "esc") you then should be able to see if the BIOS has been able to pick it up

From your previous posts you clearly have the master / slave jumpers set wrong on the drive ,

For the record , the drive on the end of the ribbon cable is always the master , the drive on the middle connector of the ribbon cable is always the slave , the jumpers on the drive must be set a certain way depending on which connector of the IDE you are connected too.

Your new CD RW drive drive worked when you used the master cable because the drive must have been set to master.
My guess is that this was the one used for the DVD drive and that the DVD is also set to master.

Check the jumpers on the drives and make sure they are set correctly , the correct setting will be printed on the top of the actual drive itself , these are different depending on the manufacturer so you have to check the print on the drive.

Heres a diagram for a hard drive showing where the jumpers are just in case you havnt done this before , this is for a Hard drive but the principle is the same for any IDE drive including DVD/CD drives.

    Thanks for the reply,

I am literally new to this but picking it up bit by bit!

OK what I did was i checked the cables inside and it turns out that there was a bent pin preventing my dvd-drive from connecting, but now that it has my cd drive has stopped working. Now I see that the dvd drive is the master, is there a way to set the cd drive to slave?

Anybody know how to set the drives to master and slave?

Look at the picture below, remove the jumper and set one of master and on the other drive set one of the jumpers on slave, they are on the rear of the CDRW. They might be listed as MA, SL, CS same thing.

Thanks for the reply, this is though on the back of my dvd drive and cd drive I have no small cables going into the slave or master socket just the cables going into the IDE interface and the DC INPUT. IS that ok? Am I missing something?

That should be fine as long as you have the IDE and power input, the other cable is an audio one (normally used if you have onboard sound and want to play a music cd in your CD ROM). It won't stop anything from working if you are without it.

I got it finally, i noticed that where it says MA, SL there are little blocks, so I popped one of the blocks into the MA and one into the SL.!!

    Thanks for all the help!!!
