What is the maximum possible upload speed an ADSL line can carry with current technologies? Without going into too many technical details, can anyone explain why is there such a huge discrepancy between upload and download capacity on an ADSL connection? (I assume it has something to do with asynchronicity)

A little over 1Mb up on a perfect line.

Quite simply - more of the available spectrum on the phoneline is used for download then upload. It was designed this way as the average home user downloads far more than they upload - so it made sense when it was designed. This was before the days of high p2p usage - although most people still want to download far more than they upload.
