Microsoft brought a touch of the Abramoviches to the next-gen football market today, fashioning a deal to secure FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer's Xbox 360 exclusivity for the next 12 months.

FIFA '07, announced for 360 today, is based on a complete engine rewrite, and today's Microsoft conference in Leipzig saw producer Hugues Ricour demonstrating the game, which is due out later this year.

But it was only following a trailer for the 360 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - playable on Microsoft's stand - that Microsoft played its trump card. Addressing a football-loving German press pack, dotted with pesky foreigners (like me), executive Chris Lewis declared, "Microsoft owns football," with no small about of zeal as he pointed out that now it doesn't really matter which game you prefer, since there's only one place to play the flagship versions.

Both games will appear exclusively on 360 for the next 12 months, he said, although the deal is next-gen exclusivity rather than the full shebang - after all, everyone knows current-generation console games don't count.

So it just means they wont be out on PS3 really for these editions?! Same thing has happened with Smackdown Vs Raw 2007!

Pfft, we were all over this on the PES forum hours ago! :p

Well, other people were, I was wandering around aimlessly completly confused as to what exactly was going on, but now I am on the straight and narrow!

Good stuff, I still have a few people I know saying "OH I can't wait to get a PS3 this Christmas", this one will definitly sort them out.

    Your damn right!!

    LIVE FTW!!!11 :D

Down with those companys offering "free online services"
I can get free beermats in a pub, does that make them better than live?

    I dont think so

i'd take beermats over live anyday, especially if they are them smirnoff ones with the little slots cut out of them so you can build with them.

nah that would just create effort :P

Maybe we could get a developer interested in bringing out an XBL arcade game where you make things out of small square bit of cardboard with slits cut in them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would surley ease the wait for Halo 3.:p

i've yet to meet anyone getting a ps3 for a football game tbh.

fifa i couldn't care less with, but PES is a loss for the playstation, though as someone said, it appears it's more a case of the devs not having the time to get to grips with the tools for ps3 fast enough rather then a "omg lets defect to microsoft", though you can be damn sure that'll be microsofts take on it

Well you aint met alot of people!

Think of all the 8-15 year old PUNKS that have ps2's now, that play nothing but football, and wrestling games...

Alot of little punks will want a ps3 a christmas, but no football game for them!
They will have to make do with ps2/xbox versions.

You need to mingle with the common folk some more then! The reasons a lot of people (re: the more casual pundit) would have pick up a PS3 was the assumption that it will have GTA/PES/Wrestling and then just the home name.

That is not the case though, at least not for the opening year. (The name will be the biggest drawing point now)

Why are the people you have meet getting a PS3 then?
