Wish to start some form of martial art

    Hey all,

Sorry if this comes across a very general question but I really haven't a clue with regard to all this.

I would like to start training in some form of martial art, as I need some form of constant exercise and distraction. However, I don't know which form would be the best to start with. I did a bit of Karate years ago (not much, very basic) and never really explored any others.

Are there any forms which are best for starting off or are they all the same at the beginning, just learn properly and keep practicing?

Also, any pointers to where classes might be located would be great.
Thanks, in advance, for any help regarding this.

Hey MoonHawk. I train in an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) club down in East Wall. The style is based on Kyokushin Karate (Full Contact) and Judo. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursday at 7pm - meet at Connolly Station at 6.30. If you think you might be interested have a look at our websites www.mmaireland.com and www.kyokushinbudokai.org.

    Good Luck,

    Dave.

Thanks for both of your replies, I'll check out those links.

I'm out in Dundrum at the moment, not sure if there are any clubs nearby.
With regard to beginners, are these clubs fairly welcoming?

    Cheers

    Hey Moonhawk,

Spartan MMA is in Firhouse, which isn't far from Dundrum. We train mainly grappling, but add in strikes.

Our club has no separate beginners classes but we pair beginners with a more experienced training partner so they can learn the ropes. You can visit us online at www.spartanmma.com

If you've any questions just give me a shout.

    Colm

I also train in Kenpo up in Taney Parish. If youre available on Friday you could come down to check it out and I could also tell you more about what we do in the club in East Wall. Training starts at 8pm

    Hope to see you there.

    Dave.

Thanks for the info lads, I've taken down those links for future reference, I'm moving house in the next few weeks (looking at the moment is taking up my spare time) but it's encouraging to know what's out there, as it's something I intend to take up by the end of next month.

    Thanks for your help

    Hey man,

FiannaGym.com is located about 7 minutes walk from the new town centre; check our map page for exact details. We offer beginners Mixed Martial Arts training. All the details about how and where we train. There are also videos to give you a better idea. http://www.fiannagym.com/videos.htm

A good idea is to go to youtube.com or video.google.com and search for videos on various martial arts videos. My favourite (I know its posted a lot) is http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5804275960634938624&q=furious+angels but if you search for Kung Fu, Karate, Silat, Judo, etc you might find something you really like.

Colm O'Reilly's gym "SpartanMMA" is great, so if you choose MMA you should go to as many places to find the training style you like!

Peace, and good luck with your search

    Best of luck

hi edges, can you tell me about the full contact kickboxing you do in pearse street?

Classes every tues and thurs, 815 to 10pm, the instructor is Richie Carton, he is closely associated with Fusco.

Richie is a former Irish Champ and has produced several champs himself, most recently Ronan MacSweeney, who will soon be fighting to regain the Irish Welterweight Title.

If you need to know more, it's best you drop down and speak to the instructors themselves. I train with them the odd time when I'm building for an event and want to boost my stamina. I personnally think Richie is an excellent coach and well worth a look.

It's currently my favourite MMA HL. 1:34 is sublime. Henderson rocks!

Also keep an open mind to Aikido.

There's an Aikido dojo in Pearse Street, just opposite "Fireworks". They run beginners classes on Monday and Wednesday at 19.45 and on Saturday at 13:00.

Give it a try, and see whether you like it or not. :)

Hey Frank. 25 is fine. Most of the people in the class are in their 20s, some of us are 26 - 27, so you should be fine. Your girlfriend is more than welsome to come along too. Why dont you give Shane (the instructor) a call and have a chat. His number is on the bottom of our website www.mmaireland.com
Just for my own interest, do either you or your girlfriend have any experience?

    Good Luck,

    Dave.
