Going to Dublin, want a new Laptop!

    hey all...
well i will hopefully be in ireland within a month *yay* and im pretty excited.

    :D

ok, heres what i need from you 'nice' peple ;) :

i want a laptop (i think i prefer Laptop over desktop because once i am settled there, i can then build my own desktop, super cool one ;) ) as soon as im there.

i dont really want to shop online for the computer because i wont have one to use to buy the new one, obviously, and also i would hate to go through all the hassles of opening a bank account then getting credit/debit card then siging up for services like paypal and then shop (again, without a computer:p ).

so long story short, can you guys PLEASE help me finding a shop/someone from where i can get a laptop within €1200

im looking for at least 1GB of memory, 100GB of hard disk, at least 2.4 Ghz (or whatever you guys think will be faster, cheaper and durable) and a decent video card for watching movies (DVDs basicaly).... i know asking for smooth game play will be too much and costly, so i wont be playing games on my Laptop.

    so guys, any suggestions?

i searched and found that theres this 'The Laptop Shop' in Stephens Green Shopping Centre but their website is down so i emailed them but im pretty sure they are going to be very expensive.

    Thank you TONS!

oh btw, im going to get the extreme Alienware someday... :D

get a MacBook for under €1200, runs whatever Windoze software you want under Parallel workstation or BootCamp plus the added bonus of a very cool OS. You can buy 'em in th O2 Experience on Grafton St and at various other locations in Central Dublin.

If you're used to windows do NOT buy a mac, I had to use one on work experience and i dont like even thinking about it ;)

I'd suggest a HP - you can customise this one to suit your price...

Operating System Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    edit

    Processor AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-37 (2.0GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
    edit

    Display 17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
    edit

    Graphics Card 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    edit

    Memory 2.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x1024MB)
    edit

Hard Drive 100 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    edit

Primary CD/DVD Drive FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    edit

Would set you back about £1,279, in the region of €1200.

"Would set you back about £1,279, in the region of €1200"

Are you sure your pound to euro conversion rate is right there ? £1,279 is closer to 2,000 euro.

I hate Dell, but I would get a Dell laptop when over here.

XE.com/ucc states it would be €1,887.47 not €1200

OP Where are you coming from? If the UK then you'd be mad to pay our prices for jumped up pieces of tack that most retailers try to flog to the general unwashed.

Best of both worlds mate! Except I don't recall him/her saying anything about running windows software all the time, why bother when you have to deal with all that bios crap and viruses, and security. :D

Or, if you're a clever shopper:

    Inspiron 6400
    Intel® CoreT Duo 2 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB
    2048MB 533MHz DDR2
    80GB SATA Hard Drive
    15.4" Widescreen WXGA
    ATI MobilityT Radeon® X1300 128MB
    Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
2 year Next Business Day Onsite Support

    €1,289 incl. VAT and delivery

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/inspn_6400?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs

So, thats a faster processor, four times the memory, bigger HDD, and a bigger screen...

You were comparing a top of the line Dell with a bottom of the line Mac! Macs have their benefits, but value for money hardware isn't one of them!

thank you EVERYONE for replying. great advices!
although, i dont really know anything about mac so i guess i will be sticking with XP. (is mac even an OS?) :s

its really interesting to know how much expensive some laptops are for nothing.

i know what im going to say next is not going to make ANY sense at all, but i really wish i could get this for 1200:
    http://www.alienware.co.uk/product_detail_pages/Aurora_mALX/aurora-m_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-EU-LT-AUR-M-ALX&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

there isnt a rule about dreaming at this forum is it? ;)

THIS IS WHAT I LIKE!!! :D:D:D:D:D

    WOW!

    well the specs are PERFECT!
thank you very much cornbb, i thought it was impossible to get a laptop in this price range with THESE specs. you surely are a clever shopper ;)

do you think that free shipping will still be offered after a month?

    once again, WOW!

so everyone, can we get another laptop with higher specs in the same price range OR cheaper with the same/better specs?

just wanting to be sure before making the decission!

    Thanks once again. :)

Don't know if they will offer free shipping in a month, but they usually have some sort of decent deal on. You could try the Dell outlet store if you like, they usually have some good deals too:

    Or buy mine :D

If you want to game a little then a discrete graphics card is a must - which does raise the price a little. I wouldn't go with a Macbook unless you already have a version of windows you can install on it. People seem to forget that to run windows on a Mac you need a license which is another ~€100.

That Dell Inspiron 6400 is quite good value though!

Hmmm  think I might get a 6400...anybody wanna fund a poor lil art student....???

Actually, talking about free shipping, how long does it usually take Dell to deliver?

    Stick with XP.

the weight of the 6400 starts at 2.8kg with those specs I'd say it will be heavier. That's the weight with integrated graphics. The specs you are looking at include a graphics card and lots more than the basic model.

Think about what you want this laptop for. If you are planning on travelling with your laptop do not get the 6400.

I'm currently on the market for a laptop and in my opinion anything heavier that 2.5kg is too heavy to lug in and out to college.

My brother has an inspiron that's a couple of years old but it's 3kg and a lot of the time he doesn't bother bringing it to college because it's too heavy and bulky.

I'm gonna go for a Macbook because it's reasonable, light and I liked Mac OS X when I used it over the summer. It's just something you have to get used to.

The Macbook starts at €1052 including VAT and delivery if you use your student discount.
