Baught a tower of ebay company with good rep but the above keeps on occuring! updated the bios and no difference! If I switch on then quickly plug them in then it will boot up fine! Also it will boot ok if restart the computer with them in it,, i.e. not switch off the computer. Havnt come across this before. Nothing in the BIOS that I can see. It is a HP computer!

Any chance of some system information? Model number, etc.

Are they PS/2 or USB? Maybe try the alternative to what you're currently using?

Is it possible that the BIOS has been set up to "Halt On Keyboard" under the main screen? What purpose this has ever served on a BIOS Ill have no idea, but may be worth something to check out?

It's actually really strange!! The monitor light flickers suggesting that the computer is dead but you can hear the hard-disk and cd-rom for a sec!

Urban Kaos: I believe the purpose of Halt on: Keyboard Error is to warn the user if the machine is booting with no keyboard attached before the OS loads. The adjustability allows for configuring the BIOS to ignore certain errors in cases where the user is doing this intentionally (eg. running a keyboardless server or diskless thin-client).

In some BIOSes, keyboard is included in Halt on: All Errors and the BIOS can be set to ignore certain specific 'errors' (eg. Halt On: All but Disk/keyboard will ignore 'no disk' and 'no keyboard').

Ahhh happy days then snowbat, thanks for showing me the error of my ways! :D

If you bought the base unit from a reputable company, then I would give them a shout and see what they can do, Im presuming there is some kind of warranty with the system from when u bought it?

Have you tried routing the PS2 cables a different way and\or other PS2 devices.

Ive seen PC's halt during the boot process simply because the PS2 cable was running near a main power source.

Have you tried using a different keyboard/mouse to see if it gives the same result?
Also did the keyboard/mouse come with the pc or are they just ones you had already yourself? Just wondering because I thought that most HP/Compaq pcs came with USB keyboards in the last 4 years or so. Also I wonder because this HP support article refers to "the USB keyboard". If you don't have the original keyboard/mouse then maybe there is some kinda weird compatibilty issue between them and the i/o controller of your HP, causing the startup problem.
