Four of our Juniors donned the National Colours and headed for Bisley to take part in the GB Junior International Match. Elizabeth, Paula Damien and Susan were all delighted and keen to get to this match directly after the World Championships. This match consists of ur juniors each shooting two air rifle matches with teams from Germany, the UK, USA and South Africa.

Damien was first in to shoot for us on Tuesday and he scored 572 in his relay to finish 3rd. This score qualified Damien to shoot in the final in 8th place. In the final, he shot 99.3, Nearly three points better than Stephen Scherer from the USA, Damien was unable to pass him out and gain a place. So Damien remained in 8th place with a score of 671.3 over all.

On the following day, saw our ladies take to the court. Our three girls Susan, Elizabeth and Paula entered the competition as individuals and as a team. Susan faired out best in the elimination round scoring 382 / 400. Sadly this placed Susan in 9th place, outside the cut off for the final, which was won be Sandra Fong from the USA, with an overall score of 487.7 / 509.

Paula had a great match and scored 373 / 400 to take 18th place. While Elizabeth shot well below her best scoring 358 / 400 to see her into 24th place.

The ladies team with a combined score of 1113 finished well down the field in 6th place some 44 points behind the USA 2 team on 1157.

Our ladies were well out gunned on this day. Much learned, more to do.

Our fortunes improved greatly on the following day.

Damien wins the gold medal in the air rifle grand prix match, with a score of 574. Well done Damien.

In the ladies grand prix match, Susan ties with Freya Pascall of the GB for fourth place, but is dropped down to fifth after count back.

Elizabeth has a better day today in scoring 361 and Paula's score today drops a bit to 361 also. Elizabeth and Paula finish in 9th and 10th places respectively.

Our juniors had a good trip, learned a lot and while their scores would be below expected, nonetheless good performances from all. And great to have a gold medal coming home.

Two hours later it was the turn of the Irish Junior women's team.

Susan scored 379 a little down on the previous days score, but giving her a 5th place finish was an improvement of 4 places on yesterdays finish.

Elizabeth was to finish in 9th place today with a score of 361 which was a good improvement on her first days match.

The NTSA would like to congratulate the team for all their work both at home in training and Internationally for representing Ireland and being good ambassadors for the Sport in Ireland.

Finally Congratulations to Damien on his fine achievement on winning the Gold Medal, may he continue to improve his scores and may this medal be the first of many.

    Patrick O'Brien
    NTSA Team Manager.

A bit galling that Matt Fox's coaching wasn't mentioned, and it's rather a tad late to be honest, but better late than never I suppose.
