This might sound like a bit of a dumb question but here goes..........

When you've set something up to record in MCE do you have to leave your computer on or does the computer go into a "sleeping" type state, if it's set to record, and then turns itself back on when the programme starts?

Sorry for such a silly sounding question but I was thinking that it'd being quite annoying if you were away on holidays and had to leave your PC on for all that time.

I don't have MCE myself, but I do use GB-PVR (and have used Media Portal).

In the latter two cases, you can set the computer itself to go into standby mode (not hibernate) and it will wake up to record, so I assume it is the same for MCE.

Yeah MCE can go into standby and will wake itself up when the time comes to record, it does of course have to be on for this to work as the standby mode is just a reduced power/activity state.

MCE can with some systems behave oddly not waking up etc. never experienced it myself but there is a tool which allows finer control over it's sleep states called MCE Standby Tool.

The Hibernator is another similar tool & is generally considered more reliable at putting the system back to sleep.

Also what you could do is make yourself a bat file that has the following command:

    shutdown /s /f

Then use task scheduler to specify when to run it, that will side step them problem of MCE not shutting down after recording the program.

FYI some people leave on MCE box's 24/7

Cheers for that, I'll have a look into it.

I wouldn't actually have a problem leaving it on all the time, it's just that it's in my bedroom so I wouldn't be able to sleep with the noise of the fan.
