The last couple of years I've been looking at small factor machines ,something that is easy to use, rather than a machine that takes over the house.
I always stayed away from them because of the whole windows thing.
When the mac mini came out ,I thought that was what I was looking for but I knew the speed was going to be slow ,so I didn't bother.
Now that the speed is up on par for small applications do you think it's worth going for it ,as a machine thats a break from the norm ???
Have read the new mac mini has a boot up time of just over 20 seconds :D:D

All the machine will be for is easy use ,web ,photo browsing ,possibly file management of external drives .
    Maybe also photo editing

(Can the mac mini read/write windows ext hard drives???)

    thanks
    brian

All Macs can read drives formatted in NTFS (WinXP) and FAT (all Windows), but only write to FAT.
If you already have external drives, look into creating partitions on them, either in FAT or HFS+ (for Mac, not sure if you can do it without one).

As for what you're thinking of using it for, I say go for it! ;)

thanks for the reply ,will probably end up getting a dedicated Ext drive of about 500GB and have it as Fat.
To me it's sounds great ,might even buy a bluetooth keyboard/mouse.

Just one other quick question ,to get the unit on a tv ,is it the old usb device thing or do they have something easy lined up for it ??

Just order one of these when you buy the mini, and get a composite (yellow) or S-video cable (cheap as chips, composite preferred).

thanks for the reply on that K.o Kiki ,
I was originally going to wait for dell to ship the new windows on their machines ,but I don't think micorsoft deserve anymore money at this stage.

Don't want to be patching windows in 40 years time ,because of holes.

    Cheers

Brian - this is exactly the reason I switched from a PC to a Mac. I was sick of running a P4 monstor that hummed and rattled my house down :) The small form factor of the mini totally sold me and having used OSX a few times I was decided.

Bought my mini back in Jan. Its a G4 with a gig of RAM and while no powerhorse, its quite capable of doing all the things I need to do - and which tally with the things you want to do.

Also, I recently got a Core Duo Mini in work with 2 Gigs of RAM and it's way faster than what I have at home. So now I personally feel that the mini is not a compromise on speed.

I would say go for it. Do not hesitate. You will not look back.

    Good luck with it.
