What are the best deals for flying to Japan, in terms of money, but also in terms of comfort, stopovers, etc?

Check out Virgin, brilliant all round, comfort, service and young friendly staff.
May be a little pricey but well worth it!!

    ANA is considering too.

I was looking at Virgin, but they travel through Heathrow (insane security, an uncomfortable, unpleasant airport, endless trek to get to your gate and a reputation for thieving baggage handlers), which puts me off.

    What's ANA?

ANA is a Japanese airline. You'll still have to go via Heathrow. Otherwise check out KLM (not so nice, but via Schipol) or Air France (ok, but via CDG Paris which is worse than Heathrow). Both offer some good ex-Ireland deals.

I flew KLM and had no problems. Decent food, pleasant staff and great in-flight entertainment.
