How is the floor of an Attic normally strengthened to support it as a functioning room?

I think there are a few different ways of doing it. A metal frame is used by some companys and the new floor is fixed to it. In my case I used 3 9x2 planks and secured them to the gabels at each end and then ran 6x2 between them. The idea is to raise the floor above the existing timbers as they won't support a regularly used floor, the ceiling below will crack etc,Luckily my attic had fairly good height originally so I could afford to lose a few inches. It's really not that complicted or difficult (apart from getting long timber up there) or expensive,I'm amazed when I hear what some people have paid to get it done.
