New Virus?

I have had 4 machines in the last two weeks with these problems, all the machines are from different places and are in no way related. It seems that the main log on account for the Windows installations (All XP Home & Pro) have their access rights removed (ie. for reading/writing from hard drive) and their ownership of files/folders reset. Also system services no longer start for no apparent reason.
Now I'm the first to yell "VIRUS!" and throw everything at it; Avast,AVG,Kaspersky,Ewido,SpySweeper,Dr.Web,Antivir etc...I use them all...nothing doing.(Apart from usual cookies...)
HijackThis'd it and nothing out of ordinary...so did the permissions fixing and ownership fixing but still not 100%...two machines required reinstalls as repairs to OS did nothing.
Wondering if its some virus I'm oblivious to or prehaps windows update gone haywire?
