If they are physically damaged, a repair wouldn't be easy so therefore not cheap. I'd be wary of anyone who could guarantee such a repair anyway as its a fiddly one. Your best bet is to go out and get a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card, provided you have a slot for it on your laptop. Pretty sure you can buy one for less than €40.

hi, same thing happened to me. had a old dell latitude ls with a 1.1 USB port and the plastic on the inside broke.
I was going to solder it myself but found a USB 2.0 Cardbus/PCMCIA(whatever it is!) on Komplett for 25€. happy days! now have 2 USB 2.0 ports when all i had before was 1.1. make sure the Cardbus is Type II. PCMCIA is Type I on my one its the cardbus speed it relies on. No install of software needed if you have XP.

Best do what these users mentioned (PCMCIA usb 2 cards aren't too pricey, alot cheaper than repairing what you have got), a repair person is more than likely going to replace the mainboard of the laptop as opposed to fiddling with the USB ports. Best of luck.

    Hey,
I had a virus in my computer and i reinstalled windows. I reinstalled the drivers from the Microsoft web site, everything else seems to work except the usb ports.
Kinda weird. From the device manager it seems that they are installed and running properly, but when i try and access them they dont seem to work (the seem loose but dint think that should have any effect on them not working).

Any suggestion on how to remedy this problem are more than welcome

How many ports are there? Do any work, or are they all not recognising your USB devices?

Had a similar problem where windows would not recognize the usb ports. Eventually they came back with uninstalling the root drivers I think but in the mean time I plugged in a usb hub which worked. That might have helped also otherwise it was a lot of messing to get right.

Never thought of reinstalling the root drivers, might be the easiest solution
What should do bout the usb ports being loose?
