Am planning to get married in my county of birth, but neither myself or my intended live there. I'm told that we need to be resident in the district for 7 days prior to the marriage. Can anyone tell me if this can be avoided or does the registrar verify this at all.

    Thanks.

I think it's 7 days prior to the handing in of notice. They will accept a letter from someone who lives in the district saying you've been staying with them for the last week. If you have family living in the area, which I assume you do as you're returning there to marry?, just get them to write a note saying you've been staying with them since date x, seven days before.

This confirms 7 days residence prior to serving the notice. Remember that minimum 3 months notice in writing must be given first, then 1 month before the ceremony, the notice must be served in person.

Be aware though that this country does not pay a huge amount of respect to civil marriage and this is evidenced by the fairly shoddy rooms they have for the ceremony (probably depends on the district) and limited seating. Some people will thumb their noses at such arrangements.

Don't let that put you off though. The ceremony is short and sweet....
Do you know of any lawful impediment, etc....?
Do you take X as your husband / wife, etc....?
(optional) I give you this ring as a symbol, etc....?

    Takes about 12 - 15mins.

My registry office wedding is in 3 1/2 weeks time. I'm just glad some old priest won't have to lecture me on how to live my life :)
