Just as a reference and to compare with the m50, and how things are done

    http://www.munimadrid.es/Principal/EnlacesHome/Calle30/Pres1/calle30.htm

Here is a page were you can watch videos about the current upgrade which is being built in the m-30 ( the inner commuter motorway in madrid, which is now inside the city).

It's in Spanish but they are very visual so you will get an idea.

The project is big and will be finished next year.
Less than three years of work and 3.900.000.000 € budget.

The whole of Spain is in the midst of a road building project of epic proportions. They built 4000 km between 1990 and 99 alone!

3.9 billion, what a budget. Lot of interesting work going on. They're replacing some full cloverleafs with half cloverleafs, like the new N4 and N7 junctions on the (Dublin) M50. Many sections going underground to be replaced by parks!

Check out the weaving in the video for "Nudo Avenida de América". Makes Irish driving look good.

Check out the "Proyectro Madrid Rio" section where they are moving the motorway underground and replacing the ground level with green spaces with paths and cycle tracks etc.

Fat chance that happening to the M50. :(

If they did they wouldnt have parks they'd sell the bloody land to developers.

But if there is ever to be another round of upgrades for the M50, it would have to be something like this or the Big Dig in Boston - massive and expensive.

Well, I live in Madrid and believe me, the M-30 is not a model for anyone.

First, it's ilegal: Look the european resolution

Second, there's no planification. All the work it's been doing at the same time. Imagine that. Tube lines broken, bus lines collapsed, roads closed... It's a real nightmare. The first thing the european commission said when they came to Madrid was "Where is the river?". There was a river here in Madrid. Now there isn't. The works are so huge that everyone here wants it to stop.

And listen, the speed traffic is not going to improve at the end of the works (and it's very slow now). And the green zones they're going to build, well there's no green zones here in Spain because of the heat. They're not going to have trees (because the car tunnel is going to be just 2 meteres below the street) just sand. And all with great chimneys because of the car smoke...

Don't pray for things like the M-30... :D

I thought Madrid was the only European capital not built on a river?
