Is it possible that you have 2 sound cards like a usb sound card or an audigy pcmcia or sommit?

If so, you're media players may be defaulting to that card instead, and not playing sound from the internal one.

Did this just start happening all of a sudden or did it happen after reinstalling?

I'm guessing that Sound is showing up in your device manager if you've checked all the drivers etc. Is it all of a sudden just not working? Have you changed something? Installed/uninstalled anything? Windows update? Did your laptop get a knock?

Check the BIOS settings at startup, perhaps it is disabled in there for some reason? In Control Panel, does it show up at all or with a yellow exclamation mark beside it?

yes done all of above nothing in the bios! No exclamation marks in the hardware list/drivers, checked contr panel -> sound options as well,, all ok! Nothing visably a problem that windows sees and nothing wrong with speakers eighter as headphone port also not working! forgot to say,, fixin for someone else who hasn't a clue when or how it happened,, you know yourself,, it also had ~600 viruses and spyware found when ran in safe mode!

Could it be something as simple as one of the volume controls being set to the bottom? Perhaps the wave volume bar or any of them checked to mute? I know this sounds like blatantly obvious stuff, but sometimes the simple fixes that works wonders!

Alternatively is there a keyboard shortcut that has the ability to mute the sound? Try plugging in some headphones; does the sound come through this jack?

If you are running Windows XP, click Start->Run and type "services.msc" in the box, without the quotes. Scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure that the service is Started and set to Automatic in the Properties. 600 viruses..I'd reformat and start again if that were me. :)
