Small lathe

I was thinkin of getting myself a small lathe. Mainly for making stuff for static models. I would intend to make stuff out of brass or aluminium. I really havent a clue what I am doing, but sure whats the worst I can do (loose finger or eye?? ). Anyone got any experience or can offer me advice as to what I should be…
