DVD drive nightmares!

Hi all! I'm new to this forum so bear with me... ;)

    OK, here goes....

In April '05 I bought a HP Pavilion t770 and up to now had no problems whatsoever with it. However, a couple of weeks ago I noticed that when the PC booted up, and started Windows Xp, there was a loud whirring noise and the sound of vibration from the F: drive (a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E)

As I play Silent Hunter 3 almost every day, I've been leaving the disk in the drive ALL the time, but never had this noise before.

I put the disk in the E: drive intead(a HP DVD Witer 630c) and it seemed fine but only for a few days because then the drive would not read the disc nor would it play ANY other disk of any type.

I put the disk back in the F: drive but alas that's not reading it or any other disk either.

So now I'm stuck with NO CD/DVD drive capability of any descrption which means I can't play any of my games or backup any data incase I bring the PC to a repair shop.

Both drives are showing up in the device manager and are "working properly"!

Occasionally, 1 disk (Locomotion) will work in the E: drive but only very rarely.

I've tried updating the drivers and rolling them back but nothing seems to happen. I've also tried uninstalling them and re-installing them but still no joy. They just refuse to read any disks at all.

Any idea what's caused this or how I would rectify it?

    Thanks in advance ;)

Lens could be dirty, try a cd/dvd rom lens cleaner. Even if it turns out that the DVD ROM is fecked, you could get one for next to nothing these days.

also unplug the ide leads to them and replug them ( this means opening up your pc ) but it is straight forward and easy to do.

But like ruu said, it sounds like they just need cleaning. PcWorld do kits for about a tenner. Or any shop that sells cd's like golden disks and hmv. It does not have to be a pc cd/dvd cleaner. any old one will do.

Since u have sai that the drive was making a whirring and vibration could indicate a blown motor within the DVD drive (f:\)

I would bear in mind the whole cleaning schabang (and there always handy elsewhere) for your other drive; otherwise maplins tend to be good for spare parts

    ;)
