Text on websites appearing in italics?

My dad's computer has had this problem for almost a year now I'd say. Text on some websites appears in italics when it shouldn't. It doesn't happen on boards.ie but I've attached examples of it on Google and Yahoo. (Maybe unless the text style is specified in the HTML or CSS, it uses italics as the default?)

This happens in both IE and Firefox, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the browser.

Any one seen this before, or know what might be causing it?

Hmm doubt it has anything to do with the Appearance settings under Control Panel->Display but have a look and see if the fonts set to default. Another idea is to download Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP and try the Repair (or maybe its Rebuild) the Font folder. Link is here.

This is something of an outfield suggestion but IE and FF both use Arial as a default sans-serif font. From your screenshots and description of the problem, it's only italicising in both browsers when it's using non-bolded Arial and hence there may be something wrong with that file on your PC.

Mmm, that's my thinking aswell, the standard version of that font could have been replaced with the italic version.
I'd say open up Word and see if you can find the exact font, see if you can toggle italics on it.

Aye, corrupted font sounds like the problem.
