    Hi

I got three wisdom teeth out yesterday and am in a lot of pain today (thank God for painkillers). The thing is i still have numbness all down one side of my tongue. I have heard dreadful stories of being left with no feeling in your lips and tongue and i was wondering should i be getting worried about this or is it normal to still have no feeling in your tongue 24 hours later.

i am sorry to hear that. it is not normal to have parasthesia of your tongue after the local wears off which only lasts a few hours. there is i believe a 1/200 chance of something like that happening. basically the lingual nerve that runs beside the wisdom tooth on the inside of the jaw has been injured or cut. is it a complete loss of sensation on that side or an altered sensation? the nerve may regenerate especially if you are young but only if the cut borders are near each other if it is cut. id be going back first thing monday morning .keep us informed what happens:(

I would also be interested to hear whether you have total numbness or pins and needles type feeling. It's something that you should consult your surgeon about, sooner rather than later. However, I wouldn't worry a huge amount about it. As lomb mentioned, sensory nerve can regenerate, sometimes up to 1cm in a year. Alternatively, inflammation and pressure on the nerve can cause this numbness or tingling.

Personally, after my wisdom teeth were extracted (I had all four in one go), I had tingling in my lower lip on one side and on my tongue on the same side. Full sensation returned after 7 days, and it returned gradually over a period of a few days, not all at once.
