Morality of recycling

Is it right for us to bring our rubbish to the recycling centres, etc, if the recyclable rubbish is then just sent to developing countries as landfill, as claimed in recent media exposes?

I don't want to be part of a cruel lie. What do others think?

Well what did you think happened to it? Do you remember any news about recent investments in recycling plants in the republic

I didn't mind if it was recycled here or elsewhere - but for it to go to landfill in other countries, that I do mind.

With all of the recyling companies in Ireland, you can always expect there to be a bad egg, but I get furious when I hear reports that "all recyclables are just landfilled" as it does an immense amount of damage to people who ARE making the effort, such as the OP.

I worked as a rep for nearly two years with the largest waste management company in Dublin, and I can assure you 110% that all of the recyclable materials they handled were treated and recycled exactly as they should have been. The technology and R&D that this company had in place for recovery of as much material as possible was frankly astounding, and pretty much everyone who was involved in the company has a genuine interest in recycling. For example, materials they recovered included cardboard, paper, shrink wrap, glass, organic matter for compost, plastic bottles, aluminium, steel cans, metal bottle tops, and many many more. A lot of this material is sorted by hand by a group of very dedicated, very hard working operators.

Having the full waste management license as provided by the EPA (and the associated licenses such as waste carrier) means that you must constantly uphold the highest standards, or risk losing the license, and for large companies, this is simply not a possibilty then can entertain.

I know there was an RTE show a couple of years ago about one operator who was caught doing this type of crap, but it was a known thing in the industry what they were up to, but without proof, noone would report it. All the feckers get caught eventually, and (hopefully) get their just desserts.

Please dont be disheartened, please keep on recycling.

Hmm. Maybe I'll start again. Damn, just put out a load of plastic in the black bin. Oh well, from now on....
