Does anybody know what the salaries are for different ranks of the Irish Army and how they compare to their British counterparts. I know money isn't everything, but at the end of the day, being in the army is still a job.

whats this military service allowance? do soldiers actually get that on top of their wages each week?

if so a pte with over 3 years is getting 110 on top of 481 a week. and if he/she has a child another 50.

are these calculations right? if so no wonder 10,000 people applied:P

Taxable. Lucky to clear €400 after the taxman has had his cut.

    Taxable.

True, but that's the same for civvi jobs, too. It's not as though taxation is the soldier's burden alone.

Basically most military jobs in western democracies are attempted to be linked to equivalent public sector payscales. The thing is, those who serve in almost any military don't get over time and have a rather different set of conditions than their civillian counterparts and can expect to spend long period of time on duty, away from families and leave cancelled at the whim of the "needs of the service".

In the UK they call it the "XFactor" and its built into their service salary. To blatently rob from their website it
"compares your Army job to a similar civilian job and weighs up the extra challenges you face as a soldier, such as time away from your family and working under pressure. It also considers the perks of Army life, such as job security and 38 days’ paid leave every year. The X Factor normally means soldiers take home an extra 14% compared to the closest civilian job.

In Australia the same concept exists and its called a service allowance and its military service allowance in Ireland. The rates of pay quoted are 2006 and have substantially decreased since then in line with all public sector jobs in Ireland.

Indeed - there are folks on this forum who have reported they know of Army families that have found it nescessary to apply for Supplementary Welfare Benefits such has been the impact of pay reductions / Pension Levies.

Could that be because you have a lot of older personnel in lower ranks? Fer'instance - older corporals - late 30's or so - with two or three children at achool?

NO, childrens allowance has not been paid to anyone who joined after the Mid-'80s

Plenty of privates in that age/family bracket, but that wasn't a problem until heavy pay cuts, along with substantial additional pension levies, cut the heart out of the wage

I know Pte's, Cpl's & Sgt's who are in receipt of Family Income Supplement, its very distressing on them even to admit they've to go and seek it.

Added to the fact that many soldiers have spouses who now have reduced or no wages coming into the house.

A British Army Sergeant in the infantry earns -

    Sergeant
    Level 7 £36,929
    Level 6 £36,249
    Level 5 £35,569
    Level 4 £34,889
    Level 3 £34,455
    Level 2 £33,603
    Level 1 £32,756

But of course he might also be in his late 20's. Most make at least WO2 in their 22 years engagement - 18 -40. I got to Staff Sergeant in just over 8 years service time.

There really is no realistic way of comparing the British and Irish armies' ranks and pay - you seem to spend an awful lot longer in any one rank than any of us do.

Compared to cost of living and currency differences etc. Do the BA and DF earn around the same pay or is one better off than the other? I know in terms of Tour allowances the DF get way more but in terms of general stay at home wages?

    Thanks

    Feeney92

To answer your question is not as easy as you might think.

Convert the BA pay into Euros @today's rate of 1.277Eu to the pound to get your answer, roughly.

Top level BA sergeant is just over eu 47,000. Without any add-ons that are usual for FSA and so-on.

My own take if that whilst the Irish military is a more stable existence with a higher salary, the overall British benefit package is better, (the non core pay and facilities, qualification opportunities) and the chance of promotion and the corresponding pay jumps much greater.
