Apologies if this isn't the correct forum.

In March 2005 it was announced that all the screens in Ireland would go digital as opposed to using 35mm reel. Has this happened or was there only a partial conversion? Does anyone know how many and what cinemas are digital?

Found www.digitalcinema.ie that lists some cinemas that are digital, but doesn't say if all their screens are or just a few. Be nice to know if you're getting a digital version or not when you book.

Then again from reading through their press releases its sounds that although a number of cinema screens are digital capable, there are few films released in digital format. :(

Would it make much of a difference?

TBH they fill the cinemas plenty the way it is, why go to the expense?

There are a few good reasons to go Digital. Clarity, no changing reels through the movie, no loading reels, or the inherent fire risk of celluloid going up in smoke. Plus, it's a huge pain the arse for advertisers to use the Cinema as a medium when reels are involved - I tried advertising in my local Cinema, the rates were fine, but it was the production costs involved that were off putting.

Oh, and you also have the ability for new movies to be pushed to the Cinema from the Studio House across the 'net, and of course, the ability to change what cinema in your omniplex is showing what movie at a whim.

the march 2005 press release turned out to be a load of hot air.

you might be interested in knowing that the new lighthouse cinema in smithfield is supposed to be digital.
