    4. Toyota Yaris.
    5. Ford Fiesta.
    6. Toyota Corolla.

Desireable from Joe Public's point of view or personal point of view?

    Is from JP's view:

    1. BMW 3 series Coupe
    2. Merceds 220 CDi
    3. VW Golf 1.4
    4. Land Rover
    5. X5

I think anything beyond that in JPs view is just functional and not desireable, e.g. Focus, Corolla, etc.

Personally, there's nothing desireable out there at the moment...

Some everyday (cheap to buy and/or cheap to run) cars I would be happy to own:

    Alfa 156
    Citroen C4(5 dr)
    Fiat Multipla(I)!
    Ford focus(I)
    Golf(II)
    Honda Accord(I)
    Merc W124
    Peugeot 306
    Peugeot 406 coupe
    Seat Leon(I)

Desirable, performance-oriented, practical/'everyday', affordable cars (all sub 25K)
...all good looking, to this beholder's eyes

    Accord Type R: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=489496
    Alfa 156 GTA: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/94011.htm
    Audi S2: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/85231.htm
    Merc 190 Cosworth: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/86083.htm
    Peugeot 306 GTI-6: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/85332.htm
    Seat Cupra R: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=486994
    Silvia S15 R: http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=5317&cat=2
    Skyline GTR (R33): http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/90662.htm
    Volvo 850R: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/87494.htm
    VW Corrado VR6: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/88290.htm

(subject to change at any time!)

I should add that the majority of new stuff leaves me cold, with a few honourable exceptions.

    Citroen C6
    Alfa 159 Sportwagon
    Chrysler 300C
    Lotus Elise/Opel Speedster
    Mazda Rx8
    Honda S2000
    Fiat Panda Diesel

That's it. Depressing that I can only think of 7 new cars that turn me on. All of the above are available new for less than the price of an X5, and I would be willing to use all of them day in, day out. I'd add an Ariel Atom to the list, but I wouldn't use that every day.

Realistically, if buying a new car I'd probably end up with an Octavia RS estate. It's only an appliance, but its a very good one at a very good price. Very sensible. Very safe. Very dull.

I can only think of one car that I would buy new. It doesn't currently exist, but it would look something like this:

engine: a small diesel (like Fiats 1.3 JTD), capable of running on veg oil and/or
    diesel

body: a five seater estate somewhere between a normal estate and a Kangoo/Berlingo with a large boot / optional 7 seat configuration

bodywork: a strong steel / aluminium frame with external, exchangable body parts made out of recyclable plastik, like the smart

seats: to be movable, re-movable or better still to dissapear into the floor when not needed

electronics: as little as absolutely necessary to be reasonably safe

standard "extras": heated, manual mirrors; electric windows allround, large opening sunroof, easy clean fabrics, tie down rails in the boot, custom made dog guard.

The whole package not to cost more than 15-18 k

i've never purchased new because of the obvious depreciation as soon as you put the keys in the ignition and it becomes 'used'

there are few cars out there that do draw my attention though,

Alfa 147 (GTA) - biased because i owned one, if it wasn't for the boot i'd still have one!!

RX8 - love the design and practicality

VW Corrado VR6 - had the opportunity to drive one of these many years ago and still remember it

Toyota Aygo - not sure but i just do

BMW E30 M3 - shame it still so pricey used

Ford Focus ST - as i originally hail from ESSEX i have to put this in:D

Kia Sedona - my fathers sitting next to me and says he;ll remove me from his will if i don't add it in. He purchased he's in France where its more exotically known as the 'CARNIVALLE'

Maserati Ghilbi - the best and last of the bi-turbo range, appreciated there is tax and insurance to take into consideration and there is only 1 dealer but, but.........

Lotus Esprit S4 - the curvy one with the kenword magi-mix 2.2 turbo, so cheap on tax!!

    bit of a range then.....

i started this list at 11am!!! Not necessarily in order.

    1) BMW 5 series (e39 - '96 - '03) - very nice drive, even in the underpowered 2.0 I have!
    2) Jaguar XJR
    3) Range Rover (not this sport rubbish, either - the daddy!)
    4) Mercedes SL500 - newer mercs mightn't be as good, but I love the look of these.
    5) Mazda RX8 - just for the suicide doors
    6) Alfa 156 Sellospeed - mighn't have a great track record here, but beautiful and quick!
    7) Peugeot 407 Coupe - again, I think they're beautiful (and have a great ad!!!)
    8) BMW M635 from the late '80's/early '90's - think they're lovely!
    9) McLaren F1 - the original one, not the new one!! (that's the never-gonna-have for this list!)
    10) My old '95 Honda Civic LSi 1.5 Coupe - I miss it still!

The DB9 would have been on my list, but I saw who 2 of the people driving them in Galway were, and would hate to branded as that big an ******* by assosciation!!!

I know, this doesn't quite belong into this thread ...but is there any fun left in having a car?

You're either stuck in traffic or speed limited. The roads are either boring or so bad they rip your car to shreds in no time. Anything thats taxable and insurable within reasonable limits will be boring anyway and soon fuel will be 2 Euro per litre ....

...so it might at least be practical :D:D:D

but as i don't want to be a spoil sport ...here's my REAL list

1 "classic" Saab 900 turbo Aero ...the full blown version
2 Alfa Brera (thats just sex on wheels)
3 Audi S4 Avant (the one JC chased up the French Alps as an estate)
4 Mercedes G 300, the one and only go anywhere car
5 The Citroen C3 Pluriel ...if it wasn't leaking like a siev
    6 the old Mini Moke
7 the old (the real!) Mini after a bit of tuning (and with the straight through the middle exhaust)
and lastly three current cars that you can't get in Ireland for some strange reason
8 Renault Kangoo 4x4 Diesel (available in the UK)
9 Suzuki Jimny 1.5 Diesel (not available in RHD)
10 Fiat Panda Diesel 4x4 (not available in RHD)

@ Junkyard; I don't get your list at all. Do you mean the most popular cars in Ireland?
Anyway, I'm going to go with desirable as stated and put down my top 10.

    1. Audi S8 - I love every model in the a8 range but this one is the daddy
    2. Porsche Boxster S - I drove a standard boxster and it was amazing so S can only be better
    3. Honda Accord - I really like Honda's design philosophy and the Accord just sums it all up for me. I'd take it before a 3series or a C-class anyday.
    4. Volvo 850 T5 - So much fun and comfort. Love the styling too
    5. Peugeot 306 GTi-6 - I had always loved the look of the GTi-6 and had read great reviews about it. Then I got the chance to drive one and it was unreal. Very mechanical and responsive. My first car was a 306 (1.4) so I have a soft spot for them anyway.
    6. Lotus Elise (S2) - I have never driven one but from what I have read I feel like it is the car for me. Absolutely stunning too
    7. Honda Civic Type R - Again haven't driven one but would love to get my hands on one.
    8. Audi RS4 (New) - Phwoar
    9. Subaru Impreza WRX - Any model. I drove a 98 WRX and absolutely loved it. Then had a spin in a 06 STi and it was amazing. Brilliant car just not mad about the styling but it doesn't matter when it drives so well
    10. Merc G55 AMG - What a beast of a machine. I have only driven an '81 280 but it was great craic. I think the G55 is awesome, I love the styling and the fact that such an old and heavy machine can accelerate to 60mph in just over 5secs. Brilliant!

What I really mean is what cars appeal to the masses, what are the most popular cars on the road here in Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,809 ✭✭✭✭smash

I reckon this list is probably a list of popular cars and not desirable cars cos lets face it if you had the money for any car, you wouldn't get a focus....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,787 ✭✭✭prospect

Based on regular cars that you'd have to respect the owner/driver:
(not in any particular order, except the order that I think them up...)

    1. Any classic/vintage car in top condition
    2. Mazda MX5 / Eunos Roadster (ultimate affordable sportscar)
    3. Subaru Outback (excellent all round)
    4. Alfa GT (Beautiful, pratical, great diesel engine)
    5. Toyota Landcruiser (the Ultimate 4wd)
    6. Fiat Panda ( Diesel 4wd - It is just cool, ok!)

    phew, this is hard work....

    7. Skoda Superb (Diesel, full kit)
    8. Fiat Multipla (multijet - if you want a people carrier this is your man!)
    9. Merc SL500 (The ONLY decent merc.... And its fab looking) *
    10. Alfa 166 (Listen to that V6. Without a doubt the very best looking executive car around, and the standard kit is unbeatable)

    * Not including the G-Wagon

I know of a guy who had a big lotto win and went out and bought a Mondeo! He had had a Mark II Escort (Cork built) from new up to that! I think that that was back around 1996.

I worked in the Ford dealership where he bought the Mondeo, the Escort was either a yellow Mexico or 1600 Sport.

That's the one alright. Curently sitting in a garage restored to mint condition by 2 guys who hounded him for years trying to buy it! Wins in car shows all over the place. Still has the original sales paperwork and brochures!!! Don't know if it was Mexico or 1600 Sport (don't know the difference), but I seem to remember 1600 in black on the back wing...

I've tried to keep it reasonably affordable & have not included any Audis (the current generation blow BMW, Lexus, Merc away as far as I'm concerned).
Many of the cars (especially the more everyday ones) would need to be highish spec.

    1. Early 70's 911
    2. Porsche 993
    3. BMW M635 (from the '80s)
    4. Peugeot 504 Coupe (V. rare)
    5. Alfa 156
    6. Mazda 6
    7. 3 series coupe (the model that's just been replaced)
    8. An '80's 3-series
    9. Citroen C6
10 One exotic - the Ferrari 288 GTO. The most beautiful Ferrari of the last 30 years

trying not to go mega expensive but it is a list of desirable cars so can't really be avoided!

    1. M5 - Without a doubt has to be number 1
    2. Audi RS-4
    3. Seat Leon Sport 1.9TDI
    4. M3
    5. Golf GTI
    6. Crysler 300C
    7. Nissan 350Z
    8. Subaru Impreza WRX STi
    9. Nissan Skyline

this is far harder than I thought it was going to be

    10. Mercedes CLK
