Was looking at various tidy telephoto lenses below the 1500 euro mark.
One was the canon 100-400 and the other a sigma 100-300 F4 ,with the sigma Id buy a 1.4 extender.
Anyone know of a telezoom that works well with fast movement ,Ive read the sigma 100-300 is a great lens.

    Thanks
    Brian

Not sure one the price but the sigma 120-300 f2.8 is supposed to be king, in terms of speed and sharpness.

thanks all ,haven't actually seen the 50-500 ,but it doesn't really seem practical.
Heff couldn't buy that lens ,I've still only got a 350D.

I have an image of a lens thats big ,but not like a tank turret.
I hope to rent one out in the near future ,so when the time comes I know what one to go for ,fed up deciding on a lens the day I buy it.

    Cheers
    Brian.

Both the 100-300 and 120-300 sigmas have internal zooming so I'd imagine the balance would easier to handle both on a monopod and a tripod.
Seen as how the 50-500 has a serious change in size the balance would constantly change ,making it an akward lens to use.
    Why is it so cheap??

Because Sigma loves you... Agreed on the changing length thing, but I think the time you're going to spend handholding it would be limited unless youre hulk hogan. Couple it with a monopod and a nice comfy cushion and one could happily spend the entire day on the beach shooting surfers... Or so I would imagine...

Regarding awkward though, I can't imagine it's that bad to use if it's sales are so good. There are scores of people all over the place raving about how much they love it. Give me a shout in about 12 months and I'll hopefully be one of em...

Aye ,surfing pictures sound cool alright ,I've seen a surfing shoot done to example the lens and they're clear.
I was originally looking at the lens ,but it just seems so grounding and the fact that it extends so long ,it must get very dark.
Theres a 50-500 in conns that they rent ,I might give it a blast when theres some boat race on somewhere.
    Thanks all .

it'd be a toss up between that and the 100-400IS anyway...

If I was swayed to buy a 100-400 canon ,I'd also look at the 300F4 prime .

I'm not good enough for a prime :D

Sorry for bumping this ,anyone know of any other zooms up to 400 or 500 ,that are worth looking at .
    So far
    50-500 ,If I need 500 I don't see the point in the 50 - 200.
100-300 ,The sigma 70-300 APO is suppose to be nearly as good.
    120-300 , Too expensive ,nearly 2,300 euro

Was looking at the sigma 170-500 ,but not much joy on the net really.
The canon 100-400 I don't like the look of ,sucking dust and dirt in.

    Anyone any ideas ??

Well, dirt and dust wise, most telephotos are gonna be the same, but tbh, it's something that can be cleaned. You can't be worried about your camera the whole time ;)

Seriously, I know you have your reservations about it, but the 50-500 is the job. Pop into Conns and test it. It's big, feels right, extending it dosn't 'unbalance' the lens as much as you think it will, plus it does have a mount for a tripod or monopod.

It's also got more range than every other zoom you mentioned there!

    :)

Nice one fajitas ,it was the price that started to get me ,the 170-500 is 800 and the 50-500 is 1200 .
Thats 400 euro ,I'm wondering how long the 50-500 lens stays at F4 .Probably go in during the week and rent it out .

    Thanks.

What about a 70-200 f2.8 sigma and a 2x tc? I had a go with the 170-500 and its huge extended :) you could go to 140-400 with the 70-200 and a flat f5.6 throughout the range, maybe a 1.4x tc too.

The 50-500 can be gotten for 800 ish

I've got a 70-200F4L at the moment and I've grown to love it now.So buying a sigma 70-200 is not on for me ,I can only buy a 1.4 extender for my lens though.
I almost went headfirst into buying a zoom ,but in the last 5 weeks its been a 10-20 sigma,430EX flash ,new manfrotto head, monopod, cokin P filters setup ,polarizers ,bags ...........

I find myself on the net all the time ,a junkie if you will ,so it's high time I got myself in the zone with the stuff and not keep looking at it

    Fairwell for a while ,
    Thanks again.

    Brian.
