939 & Am2

    Hi Guys.

I have built quite a few machines in the last few years but none recently, putting me a little out of the new tech loop. Can someone tell me what the deal is with these new AM2 Processors, and compared to socket 939 processors? On Komplett they use to have a ton of 939 Mainboards but stock only a handfull now..

The SLi boards, i never thought it was worth it to make a SLi config..
    What do you think now?

    Thanks

Think of the move from 939 to am2 as more of a side step from amd rather than an upgrade.

Am2 incorporates ddr2 support and... thats about it really.

Tbh theres no real performance benefit of going am2 now if you already have a decent 939 system. But am2 would be more future proof (if there is such a thing in the computer world). Am2 is supposed to be forward compatible with am3, you also got next gen opterons and k8l coming up as well.

You might find this article interesting: First Look: AM2 DDR2 vs. 939 DDR Performance

However, even though I went AM2 a month ago if someone was asking advice now I would have to say get an intel conroe as they really do look good.

As for SLI - it really only shines if you have a monitor with a large resolution say > 1680x1050 or 20" and up.

Going sli now might be a bit of a waste since dx10 cards are around the corner - ATI are bringing theirs out November I think (correct me if im wrong).

That's fantastic, thank you very much.

This new system is for a friend so i will get the AM2 being more future 'proof'.
And the SLi is not neccessary, thanks again mate.

    Dont bother with AMD atm

Go for intel conroe cpu. Much faster. better bang per buck too. And more futureproof them the am2 platform.

Glad to help, but only go am2 if your friend has their heart set on amd.
As I said above, and anti as well, conroe really is better bang for buck at the mo'.

If you do go am2 get a cheap cpu (like this x2 3800+), overclock the bejaysus out of it and upgrade to an opty or k8l in 6-12 months time :)

Now now -- AM2 Semprons, while single-core, are damn fine for gaming, and OC pretty well too.
A Sempron 3000+ (the 256kb cache one) should only be around €50 too; where's the Core2Solo to top that, eh?
