Where would I find the "shutter count" or whatever you want to call it in a D70 menu? (i.e. the number of times the shutter has actuated).

    Thanks :)

    edit...another thought....whats the difference between the d70 and d70s?

The most reliable way is to take a photo with the camera and look in the EXIF data. You'll need an EXIF viewer that can display that value, a free one is available from http://www.opanda.com/index.html. Other methods such as looking at the file name i.e. DSC_nnnn.JPG and taking nnnn as the shutter count are less reliable since this can be influenced by settings on the camera, have wrapped round or even have been deliberately reset.

Is there a count at all? I don't think there is.

Thanks. I had found that method. I thought there would be a counter in a menu somewhere? Guess not.

I think the default setting on the D70 is to reset the image number when the card is formatted. I changed this is my D70 just recently.

Yes, the default setting is to reset the number when the card is formatted, a new card is inserted or a new folder is created. I set mine to keep numbering sequentially the day I got it, as do most people I know with this camera. Makes it less likely to get duplicate filenames when transferring pictures from multiple memory cards.
