Aurora Alert tonight

Just got this from the Astronomy Ireland mailing list (have no idea how I ended up on that list but it's handy from time to time :))

"Following a gargantuan explosion on the Sun 2 days ago there is a chance of an aurora (a display of the Northern Lights) happening tonight August 18th. Look for glowing curtains, rays or glows in the north sky with the naked eye. Check Saturday and Sunday night too just in case."

We're probably a bit too South for it down here in Cork but it might be worth a look if you're up the country. Post any pics if you get them!

Oh I'm just guessing, I haven't got a feckin clue about this sort of thing! I'd say if you drove far enough out of the city you might see something.

Aye but no matter how bad it is, I bet it's still better than it is in Scotland ;)

    Doesn't matter anyway

    From Spaceweather.com :

WEAK IMPACT: A coronal mass ejection hit Earth today at approximately 1630 UT (12:30 EDT), but the impact was weak. It did not spark a geomagnetic storm. Unless circumstances change, auroras are unlikely tonight.

I heard nothing on radio either, usually radio auroras occur before visual ones
