30D or 5D, debate and discuss...

I have the option of getting a spanking new 30D or a little used 5D for only a couple of hundred quid more as a second body. Both body only. Little used 5D apparently is still in warranty till Sept 2008. Seems in good nick, although I havent had chance to clap eyes on it yet.

Debate and discuss; while also making my mind up for me.

On a related note, anyone in Cork have a 5D I could take a look at? None of the so called camera shops in Cork have one in stock or will be getting one in the next 2/3 weeks.

rymus theres a guy 'stuv' on the potn website selling a brand new in box 5d for 1350GBP fom canon uk plus you et 200GBP rebate back straight from canon with 12 month gaurantee ( I got a 350d off him for travelling as I don't want to lug around my 1d mii)...won't last long the offer. These cameras are aimed at 2 different markets, I'm sure you know the main differences between these cameras, at the end of the day its down to what you shoot most, if you shoot landscape and portraits weddings etc 5D hands down but if your use telephotos the 1.6 crop factor makes the 30d more appealing.

best of both worlds so... cos I'd be keeping my 20D as a second body...

the price I've gotten on a 5D is more appealing than 1350GBP, it's actually far more appealing - 1400EUR, or about a grand cheaper than retail. I'm on the same train of thought as you I'd say, I do alot of landscapes and that kinda stuff. Curiouser and curiouser, didnt realise spending money was this difficult :D

Rymus, what camera do you have already?

If you had say a 350D I'd go with the 5D and keep the 350D (for the 1.6 and when I don't want to lug around the 5D).

    (/suddenly I'm an expert!)

In your situation, with a 20D already (assuming you can get it fixed), at that price I'd go for the 5D. You're clearly an advanced enthusiast and may as well extend your range rather than having two almost identical cameras. Of course, you'll then have good reason to buy a whole new set of lenses, but you're probably going to continue buying expensive glass anyway, whatever bodies you have!

Edit: and at 1400, you'd be mad not to grab the 5D, even if you were just to sell it on!

The final price is 1150GBP for a new 5d, but 1400 for one with little use is good bargain. I would definetly buy it over the 30d especially since you have a 20d, you have to remember the 30d was'nt much of an upgrade on the 20d.

5d - if you pass on it at that price I'd be interested if its available.

    Hehe ^^^^

God it must be an awful decision to have to make :)

Ya go for the 5D I reckon, for the sake of a few hundred quid. The difference between the 20D and the 30D just isn't enough to justify having two of them.

Apparently the sensor in the 20D is denser than the 5D. Which apparently means that if you took the same shot with the same lens on each camera and cropped the 5D's image down to the same size, the image form the 20D would be of better quality. So keep the 20D for the telephoto shots and the 5D for the wider stuff.

    5D, case dismissed :)

Ahh the old rumour mill strikes again.
Go for the 5D, as already said you could probably make a profit on it were you to sell it on. The only thing is I've read that it can expose any weakness in your lenses, so you may be forced into shelling out for L series stuff in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

Id be hoping to marry it to a 70-200L IS fairly shortly anyway :D

Thats why I want to get my hands on one to test it out. I'd like to see if my current crop of lenses (apart from the Sigma 10-20 which wont actually go on it) will yield good or bad results. Coudnt be too bad with a sigma 24-70 f2.8 and a sigma 150mm f2.8 macro surely!

Great attitude for a mod :)

Are you sure the Sigma 10-20 won't fit on it? I was pretty sure that's an EF mount, was thinking about buying one tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

    it's a DC, for APS-C sized sensors

At that price, the 5D definitely. Only thing to bear in mind though is that as Roen pointed out, it's supposed to be merciless on lenses, Michael Reichman and others seem to be of the opinion it's a waste of time to put anything other the L glass on it, though you can of course use all that nice glass on the 20D too :)

which is exactly whats worrying me.

Ah screw it, just go for it!

turns out I might be getting it sooner than expected.. even if I have to drive the length of the bloody country to get it :(

after further investigation, I think it may be too good to be true. It's starting to smell awfully like a scam.

    Damn!

Your 10-20 and soon to be purchased 30mm will vignette on the 5D, but go for it...you know you want to.

And I'll need a loan of it next time tall ships come down... *cough*

... well, that and common sense prevails... A nearly new, still under warranty €2,500 camera for €1,400? Either someone took an engraver and wrote their name on the sensor or the seller just doesnt get the whole selling cameras thing...

Either way, I sit anxiously by my email...

    Breaking News!
Local Photographer, going by the name Rymus found in a comatose state with signs of severe sexual abuse. The photographer was found in the northern part of the country, with little of his dignity left after a scammer made him trek the country in chase of a 5d...

    Imagine it...

    would this be

Canon EOS 5D camera (Body). Connaught Sligo €1400.00
    Perfect condition €1,400

    bla blaa...
seen in the Buy & Sell ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

the very same, were you chatting to 'Anna' too? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Fionn

nope i saw this last week but thought it was wayy too underpriced.
    there was another too:

    Canon EOS 5D. Leinster Dublin 9 €2495.00
New model, body only, never used, full frame, 35mm negative size, 12.8 megapixel, €2,495.

seems more in keeping with the expectations of B&S punters

    pixmania sells it for €2,766

most camera kit advertised on B&S is usually very spendy considering its second-hand goods

    as always Buyer Beware!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

I'm just hugely gullible then... as per fecking usual... I thought it from the word go though, especially when I saw that other ad for 2495. Ah well, at least I wasnt stupid enough to send any money eh :D

    Right then, it's 30D :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭colmranger

Beware of B&S offers of cheap Canon 20ds 30Ds or 5Ds. I was interested in a bargain priced Canon 5D on it ans i sussed it out.

There is a foreign person constantly putting tempting bargain ads on it saying it's in Carlow, Donegal etc and you can only email. When you look to see the camera they say they are away on business and they try to talk you into sending the money via Western Union before even seeing the camera. The chap dealing with me was pretending to be a woman from Carlow and was away in London indefinitely on business. I was emailing him for nearly 4 weeks and he just kept pushing me to send the funds and the camera would be posted on.

I never fell for the scam but beware the similar ads are on it every week, i was wondering should i contact B&S about it?

If someone buys a secondhand camera and it turns out to be faulty ,they sell it on to someone else ,what rights does the third party have??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 847 ✭✭✭FinoBlad

    no rights _Brian_

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,332 ✭✭✭311

Thanks finoblad ,wasn't sure about that ,is there a return policy on ebay that goods can be returned if not up to scratch??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭davmigil

Some of the ebay business sellers offer 7 day return policies. Private sellers normally don't.

If goods are not in way described you can take up the matter with ebay (if seller uncooperative). I don't know how good the procedures are though.

Watch out for items with descriptions hidden in write-up. I saw one camera that was described as in excellent condition in the headline, but reading the write up was a line to say autofocus not working!
