I don't think its just me thats getting a gickload of spam emails to mymail these days is it? The tcd mail used to be pretty good at blocking spam! I'm gettin about 20 spam mails a day now, personal favourite being the Barclays one. If you try reply you gettin little snippets from Misery for some reason! Anyway does anyone know if IS services are doing anything about it cause its getting seriously annoying these days?!

Yea, ive noticed i'm getting a lot lately aswell. Glad its not only me, I pretty much use my email address provided by the CS Dept instead, spam never gets through on that one.

ISS are lazy bastards, I really doubt that they even know there is a problem. I wouldn't count on them.

Thats strange, spam to a tcd email address!!

I suppose you can change the settings in the email client to prevent spam from coming in your inbox.

Huh? Well at least you got the right thread, I suppose.

Question, are you both using the spam assassin? If you registered in college (students or staff) before July 2004, you have to opt-in.

    http://isservices.tcd.ie/email/spam.php

From here you can change the settings. Look out for the words 'quite aggressive' if you're feeling trigger happy.

I dunno, for me the spam has died down - there was a period where I was getting TONS of it but now getting very few.

I recently have been getting some offers for cheap watches... they know my only weakness!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,234 ✭✭✭Edwardius

Halifax, barclays, "first third bank", cheap watches, valium, viagra, cialias (whatever the **** that might be) xanex, (spam emails, not a weekend's festivities), nigerian crown princes looking for an advance of 1000 dollars and when he relocates I'll get millions. Think I set up a spam filter some time ago but it doesn't work. all mail is forwarded to the gmail at the min so the spam filter takes care of that. 25 a day is the average so a serious and terminally fatal dose of murder is in store for these ****ers if I ever find them.

I've been getting spam to my @tcd.ie email address since 1996, but I think I'll try this spam assassin thingy. DCU have a great system for stopping spam, I'm told...

I have one too, I've been trying to cancel the email account and one hotmail account too how do I do that?

Also, I can get you a very good deal on a personal loan from Fifth Third Bank. To confirm it, all you have to do is just e-mail me your details so it can be put through the system... ;)

Probably. But it was free, so I didn't care at the time. I could stay on the internet for longer! I was happy with that.

And by the way, some of us (here in this forgotten corner of Meath, even though it's <15 miles from Dublin airport) are still stuck in "ye olde days of dialup internet". **** YOU, EIRCOM. (I really, really hate Eircom.)
I have one too, I've been trying to cancel the email account and one hotmail account too how do I do that?

You don't have to cancel it..just get a new email address and don't use those ones anymore. The only problem with mine is that some people insist on sending personal emails to it, despite my insistent "Don't use this ****ing address, it's full of spam, you retard" emails.

I never get spammed on my tcd account

I used to get about 50 spam messages a day from eircom and a couple of other hosted email accounts.. and usually the same messages .. but box trapper and outlook rules took care of all that!

Saying that, we get FAX-spammed a fair bit at work... some can be quite funny though

Thats grand then, do you know if they are automatically deleted by the server after disuse for a period of time.

Yep, they should have considered that people would want to look at silly videos on fast internet connections when installing phone lines back in oooooh the seventies. The fact is, those lines were designed for voice calls and telex transmissions and weren't even intended to carry faxes, so a 56k connection is about all you can expect. You're saying eircom are ***** because your corner of the world hasn't its own broadband line? I think the major population centres and businesses are gettin' sorted before any large scale rural rollout is even considered, and it will be at ridiculous expense to the company. Seeing as they're no longer a state company I'm not sure they're even obliged to do such a thing (don't quote me on that 'un), so shut up and have some damn patience, bitch.

    Seeing as

-nearly every exchange in Meath BUT my local has been upgraded, and the fact that
-we've been over the trigger for about 18 months now AND have been promised a line upgrade for roughly double that, and
-our line is absolutely dire as it is, and frequently drops calls despite numerous complaints from all in the area,

I think I'll reserve my right to bitch about and pour scorn on Eircom.

Sooo, they're doing pretty well on average then.

Didn't know you were actually promised anything. I think the dropped calls occur because they're out to get you.

Well, eircom are required to maintain a certain minimum with regards to the provision of services. Unfortunately, it was agreed a very long time ago and thus bears little resemblance to what one would expect in a supposedly very developed OECD country. As for a line, eircom are under NO obligation to upgrade your line at all. They are simply obliged to provide you with one. To do this, they are in fact allowed split the existing lines in the area, thus decreasing the call quality and data capability. While they have been given out to for excessive use of line-splitting (particularly in the West of Ireland), nothing has ever really come of it.

The internet thing is nearly as bad. Eircom are required to ensure that everyone can access the internet at a speed that must be a minimum of...9.6k. So, yeah, they can claim 56k is doing you a favour. This would be why Uzbekistan has more broadband then we do.

Now, I could be horribly out-of-date on all this, but that used to be the situation. I know they have committed to roll-out broadband everywhere, but a commitment is not the same as a legal obligation. If I am wrong, I'll be happily corrected.

And into the fray step Babcock & Browne, a small Australian bank who just love leveraged buy-outs. Oh yeah, good times. ;)

Back on topic, Mymail does seem to be getting an increasing amount of spam. But perhaps ISS have deliberately taken their foot off the filtery pedal. Aren't we supposed to be moving to a new system sometime this year? Either that, or I'll just have to fix those settings. Right after I validate my account details just like Fifth Third Bank has asked...
