I remember hearing talk of the front facing CCTVs on Dublin Bus would be used for catching people driving and parking in bus lanes. Does anyone know if its going ahead or how it'll work?

I wonder if the bus driver could be fined for driving the bus in the cycle lane :)

I wonder if the cyclist can be fined for cycling on the road when a cycle lane is available?:)

    Oh good lord.

    Not this again.

It is up to each individual to do what is safe for those around, other road users.

If it is safer to be on the road, then so be it.

If there is a burned out car in the buslane do you sit behind it or do you drive in the normal driving lane and then go back in the buslane after it?

    Common sense recommended again.

If theres a cycle lane, use it.

If for some reason you cant use the cycle lane, go on the road but be safe and curteous to the cars. Or go on the pavement for the small section, just be sensible around pedestrians.

The idea is if there is an accident, then the forward facing camera will give a good indication of what happened.

I heard that too but only if someone else wants to press charges against the driver. What I referred to originally was that the cameras would be used something like speed cameras - the bus driver would note the time they passed a car parked/driving in a bus lane and the reg plate could be read from the film later and used to send penalty point notices to car drivers. Would have been a great idea if it had gone ahead.

Shame, as I think that's a brilliant idea as well.

I know the guards are short staffed, but do we have to do there jobs too?
It is a good idea, not sure how it would work though, the disc is on the bus and simply overwrites itself every 30 days untill an incident accurs then it is taken out of the bus and replaced, It would mean almost every disc would have to be changed everyday, thats alot of work, who would pay the disc mans wages?

Fair comment, why should the pedal heads use the bus lane all the way to the CC when the cycle lane is clear of burnt out cars? The cabinteely section is road swept daily with the little monster ensuring a clean puncture free surface.

Point taken, it's not a drivers responsibility but it was a good idea if the finer details had been worked out and an agreement reached. I guess the driver could hit a button which would extract a freeze frame from the video and only those frames would be downloaded to the depot for examination.

Failing that, perhaps buses could be equipped with wild-west train style bull bars and simply ram cars out of the bus lanes? :D

We only have one man on the CCTV roster.
This means he has to get to all the DBK fleet between say midnight and 530 and also come in during the day for accidents.

A bit short sighted once people became aware that they could be caught this way word of mouth alone would decrease the number of people cutting in in front of buses and driving in bus lanes. A few prosecutions highlighted in the media could reduce travelling time on a number of routes and would easily be self financing in money saved in overtime and dropped journies.

As it is the cameras are used alot by the Gardai they are basically a roaming CCTV the Gardai are regularly collecting videos of Accidents, robberies, assaults etc both on and outside the bus.

Not correct. The main reason for the cameras is to cut the bus companies' insurance payout bill from fradulent and inflated claims.

I believe there is some legal problem with using that footage as a basis for fines. I agree though, it would be of great benefit as a deterrent and also a punishment for those who block buses.

An automated system for processing the footage and identifying culprits would really be needed though, the drivers have enough to do without having to log the times.

There could be a button on the steering wheel or close by that could be used to electronicly mark the tape. Configure the garage with a wireless LAN to download either entire tapes or just the sections wanted.
