Question to anyone who is winning at poker.

In you average session do you ever drop a buy in? Maybe 2? Or is it a case where you drop to 50-80% of the max buy in and then top up?

I always win the first hand and after that my stack never drops below my original buyin. One time I split the first pot and had only 99BB after the rake; I didn't play for a month after that happened.

    op rate is about 25%
LOL. man that was horiffic. it was good you took a month of. You would have just tilted off your whole bankroll.:D :D

Anyway to the OP, id say id drop my first buyin about 25% of the time. That can simply be because im going card dead and getting nothing on the flop and the stack gradually dwindles away. If i drop my second buyin id generally call it a day unless its because of some luckbox that just outdrew me and i think i can still beat the table.

If ive lost 80% of my buyin i tend to wait for a moment where i can push all in with a good chance of paying off well.

RT, I said players who win.... :P

Thanks BrokenArrows, it's good to gage how the average session for a winning player goes. Been slightly loosing over the last 3-4 weeks, afer having a winning 5-6 weeks. Not sure where I'm going wrong, but think I might not be being aggressive enough.

I normally top up if I drop 25% or so of my buyin

You should always topup if you don't have enough on the table. If I drop anything over 20% of my stack I'll topup. If I find myself repeatedly topping up I'll move table.

Whenever a player at my table tops up after losing his first pot or two I tend to give him respect. I don't really know why.

It's hard to talk about an average session because I don't know if there really is such a thing. You could be all in with the best hand 3 times and lose 3 buyins, you could go a whole day and break even, etc.... You really have to judge it over the course of a week. It's probably better not to get too hung up on each particular session as you're only creating stress for yourself. Don't think to yourself "I have to come away from this session with a profit", just focus on playing your best and let the profit sort itself out. As others have said, always top up.

I think I've taken my eyes off the prize and been focusing too much on each session I play and not the quality of the poker I've played, which has in turn changed the way I play for the worse.

Time to go back to playing good solid poker.

    Thanks all for your replys.

There should be a checkbox on poker sites that automatically tops you up to the maximum allowed at the table whenever you fall below it. When playing cash you should do this yourself, and try to forget how much you are in for. Just focus on whether you're playing well or not, and if you think you are likely to win against the players in the game.

Why would you play with 20% of the buy in at a cash table? Aren't you just minimising the value of your good hands and increasing variance (because a wider range will call you)?

i dunno its just what i tend to do.

Ill try the constant topping up method over the next few weeks and see how it goes.

I think there is a really good thread on it a while back, you should give it a search
