VOIP advice

After getting another huge bill from Eircom I've decided to get voip, but I need to keep my line rental with Eircom because I have my DSL with them. From reading these forums it seems I should go with Blueface, but can you keep your own phone number? Also is a 128Mbit upstream rate good enough for calls? How does voip affect your total download allowance (only allowed 1Gig at the moment)?
Any other advice is more than welcome.

Well if you're using ADSL then you still have your existing phone number. VoIP runs over the Internet so existing landline services are not affected in any way.

128Kbit upstream is sufficient. The Eircom broadband packages though are poor value and you'll get more for your money (in terms of bandwidth & download allowance) with another provider (e.g. BT do 2Mbit/256kbit with 20GB cap for €40 per month including line rental). The more bandwidth headroom the better of course but it's not essential
