    Howdy all,

Finishing a contract at the end of Oct, will be going to Vegas and surrounds for 2 weeks or so.
I was wondering what to expect at this time of year, what the standard of play will be likeetc. With so many people at the wsop would i be right in thinking the play (holdem) would be of a pretty high standard, mainly from regulars/locals
. I am not bad but by no means brilliant, over here i usually play cash games and usually more times than not walk away with at least a double up in profit, should i get more tournament experience, i have rarely played in them. Obviously going for the fun but with a view to winning:D

This will be more of a 1 week holiday and 1 week of poker.

If anybody has been there around this time, please pass on the info

    cheers

    Hi Empirix,
Been to Vegas end of October, start of November 2 years ago, heading there again for a week this year.
Although this year will be more of a family thing, I hope to get some poker in.
On the last visit I had just started playing poker (hand about 3 good months under the belt on line with moderate success).
Started playing 1/2 & 2/4 limit games in the Monte Calro poker room which I found to be very well set-up.
    Before I left I had played in 3/6 & 4/8 limit games.
Also played $100 SnG (10 players) which I enjoyed, preferred them as a beginner.
Other poker rooms which I thought were good are in the Mirage and Caesars Palace.
    Didn't play downtown.

There are people from all over the world visiting all year round.
You get the good, the bad and the fish (all standards) on all tables.

Hope this helps but you may be a more experienced player looking for bigger games.
They are difinitely there I just don't have experience of them.

Sorry for dragging up another Vegas thread, but would really appreciate some advice on where to play in Vegas with my budget, cos I can’t find much info on the cheapskate end of the market by searching.

Basically, I’m going to Vegas for 3 nights in late October, staying in the Luxor, and want to keep to a budget of about €300 for my gambling. I used to play a few single table tournaments for €5 and €10 online for about 6 months until about 9 months ago, and generally made a small profit on them. Stepped into a cash game online once and got minced. Played 2 tournies on PokerStars the other night and won both, which was nice cos I earned €120 towards my Vegas fund. I generally beat my mates in home games but standard is dire. So I know the basics but haven’t had much practice, and really I just want to play in Vegas to sample the atmosphere and enjoy it. If I get a few hours out of it before I bust out, then all the better, cos I just enjoy playing it and hopefully winning a few hands along the way. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be giving it 100% and am sure I won’t be the worst there, but I’m going in expecting to say goodbye to that €300 and then walk away.

I really enjoy single table tournaments (are these known as SitnGo’s in Vegas or STTs?) so if I can find one with a low buy-in (e.g. max €50 in, €50 rebuy) it would be perfect – any ideas?

Giving a multi-table tournament a lash for the craic would be great aswell – are there any aimed at the cheapskate market, or any feeder tables to bigger ones?

As for cash games, think I read one thread here that said the Luxor has a €50 max buy-in $1/2$NL game – is that right and what’s the standard like, cos it might be a decent chance to sample a cash game with fairly limited exposure to loss?

What’s the deal with buying in with less than the max in cash games, it seems to p1ss people here off, but by my reckoning is it not a sure way of spotting someone who doesn’t know what they’re at and so gives you an advantage?

Read some points here about chopping the blinds when it’s folded around but didn’t cop what it meant: is that if you’re the dealer and it’s folded around to you that you should fold, even if holding AA (seems bizarre)?

Anyway, nice one for any dig out you can give.

    .

the standard is absolutely dire if you go along just after lunchtime as they've just finished their 'poker school' for beginners

I turned my $50 into 500+ both times I played there, a $50 buy-in is a joke imho but sounds like it will suit you if your budget is limited?

    you could always play limit....

IF you're interested in playing STTs go to the Mirage. Within your budget and very well run.

check out the Alladin, was there last oct/nov and they ran about 3/4 tournaments a day, Multi Table.

Not sure of the times but i think 10.00am, 1.00pm, and maybe 7.00pm, all at reasonable value with breakfast provided for the morning session.

You might try their website for details.

    excellent, nice one lads.

Good idea, will try their sites to see if I can get info.

Stuntman, why is a €50 buy-in a joke? I'm not questioning this in any way, just wanna try understand it better. Is it cos you're sitting there at the start with a max raise of only 25 times the BB? Actually, now that I think of it, you could be joining a game where someone has increased their stack to say €200, so you'd be massively shortstacked going in at €50 - is that the main downside?

Will defo be hitting the Luxor after lunch to try my luck against my fellow suckers so :) .

Will check out the Mirage and Alladin too.

How does it work for getting into a game: for cash games do you just buy your chips and sit into an empty seat, and for tournies I assume there's just a spot where you go to register?

I found this site giving reviews on all Vegas poker rooms and it seems pretty handy. I reckon I'll have to try the $50 buy-in $1/$2 NL game in the Luxor just once to get a taste of live cash games, but I reckon I'll focus on SNGs (are these identical to STTs or are there any minor differences) for most of my time there.

I wanna get a feel for what is and isn't a decent blind structure for an SNG. It seems average starting chips in SNGs is only 30 times the BB with the blinds pretty much doubling roughly every 15 minutes. Is that crapshoot territory or can you still play tight-agressive in that structure? In any pub tournaments I played the blind structures ruined it as you had to get lucky early or you were gone. The one time I played the Friday night scalp tourney in the Fitz the structure was much more conducive to good play, but can't remember what the structure was.

Here's some sample SNG structures (Paris room seems to attract a lot of newbies which seems perfect for me). Is the Paris one just about ok (TI one seems like a joke)?
