Thinking of heading to the States on my next holiday, renting a car and driving from the East Coast to the West Coast. Anybody done this and know how long I'd need to do it comfortably?

I used this book to do a similar trip.

We took 3 weeks but 50% of the transport was made up of internal flights (for the boring bits)

For renting a car give orbitz.com a try.I got an ecomony car for 16dollars a day while in LA.I was told they never have ecomony cars in stock and they automatically upgrade you to mid-size car(Which they did).Picked car up in John wayne airport.Dont forget to get insurance,I got damage to rental plus if I hit someone.Worked out $68 for 4 days.Overall I paided $186 for 4days and that was including the $32 I spent on refilling car before dropping it back.

But those 4days were for driving around LA and not route 66.
