Best way to upgrade dell laptop memory? (256 to 512)

    I'm looking into buying a Dell laptop that comes with 256MB RAM. I'd prefer to have 512MB, but to upgrade to that costs €95 that I don't have.

    Is there a better way of upgrading? Can you buy a dell laptop and then buy memory separately? And if so, where's the best place to buy? and what's the price range?

    You can get an extra 512Mb for say an inspiron 1300 for €55 (I'm sure you'd have to pay delivery on top of that) from www.crucial.com
    Dell are not cheap at all with their extras. Deviate from the standard package at all and they screw you.

    Yes you can buy RAM separately. Provided you have a free slot in the laptop, you can just add another 256MB. You can look up your laptop model number at www.shop4memory.com or www.crucial.com and it will tell you the exact type of RAM you need and how much. shop4mem offers free delivery in Ireland which is a bonus.

    Try www.shop4memory.com , they also have a memory config tool if you are not sure what type you need.

    Make sure you get plenty of RAM with the laptop or find out how much it is capable of holding before buying.

    This is complete rubbish. You can buy it later and not invalidate your warranty.

    Not necessarily... That's why Memory, etc. is accessible without taking the whole laptop apart. But anyway, whenever I have to return a laptop to whatever Manufacturer, I simply remove any added RAM or Wireless cards and say nothing about them ever being present. They're none the wiser so warranty stays valid. :D
