Year out/Externally repeating questions

So exam today didn't go great, reckon I *might* have scraped a pass and the next two are also possibilities for passing (haven't had much time to study really, doing long hours on INTRA but went in every day for the past week or two for a quarter to eight and left at 4 and straight up to DCU, problem is it's about an hour and a quarter each way so ended up fried from it...)

I love the job I'm in and have mentioned to them I might like to take a year out and work there full time for the year which they're very happy about.

I may have no choice depending on exams :)

    So my questions are
    a) If I pass how do I go about organising a year out, do I just not register this year and then go back next year to register? I'll be asking someone in the facility soon but thought I'd ask here first.
    b) If I fail one of these exams and choose to repeat externally do I need to register to do the exams at Christmas (all semester 1 exams) with the year behind me or do I have to register as per normal but only for the exams I want?
    c) If I repeat externally the year am I liable to pay fees for 4th year as I'll have technically been a student for 4 years already?

You have to fill out a deferral form AFAIK. get them in the registry!

Just register for the exams you're sitting. you'll also need to register to repeat the year externally. think its about €400 but that includes your exams. and that includes if you have to do more than one.

    no.

Hmm. I dunno if I can face the thought of repeating tbh... :/

We'll see how this exam goes in the morning...

am i the only person that doesn't actually mind having to repeat one module next year and just work instead?

Yes, kind of. At least you know people in the year behind you. Others don't and risk losing touch with their friends when they fall behind. Not to mention its also a waste of a year in the grand scale of things, you have to work to keep yourself up there which could leave you with sfa unless you get a decent job and some people also worry that it will reflect negatively on their CVs.

I wouldnt mind really, infact it'd be a welcomed break. I was considering deferring one year at some stage anyway.

BUT the difference between deferring and having to do it because of one fucking exam just wreaks my head. One exam, ones measly crappy difficult math thing :(

    /me goes back to study

And you're not worried that having to repeat the year will harm your chances of getting said masters?

Would that not depend more on your final grades? and maybe on the yr you repeat i.e. repeat first yr not so bad?

Well you grades would have an effect also of course but if I was an admissions officer and I was deciding who got into a Masters with a limited number of places, someone who had to repeat the year would have a little red flag over their head. That said if the rest of their results were great it wouldnt be as much of an issue I guess. :)

As Simon says, waste of a year really and big issue would be losing touch with people in the class, I mean I would be lost without simon!
and also wouldn't be associated with those 2nd years :)

Even if you do the Masters, prospective employers may still ask about that "missing" year as an undergrad. I was quizzed on my repeat year (despite having an msc) in some interviews - tis no fun.

Good luck to all doing repeats - i feel your pain!

i'm with you on that one actually.

i dont mind the one/two module repeat cause its not as much pressure, plus build up a nice bit of money working in the meantime.

and for losing touch, in fairness more time spent in pub then attending lectures with mates.
