    Hi All,

    Does anyone know do repair places or anywhere buy broken laptops for parts. I have an old Inspiron bought March 2003 for about EUR2,800. I just bought a new hard drive for it - basic 40gb - but after putting it in have now realised the CD drive is kaput. So can't install O/S without Cd drive. Also it seems to be over heating and powers off anytime between 30mins and 2 secs.

    I've spent a fair bit on repair shops they said replacing the hard drive would fix it after saying it was a virus etc. Think now it must be H/W - maybe some thermo chip? Can't find anyone who can locate/repair. So think my best option now is to cut my losses and buy new.

    Would love to recoup a fraction of the money this thing has cost including trying to repair it. So there's a new HD, screen and everything else bar the CD drive - how much would this be worth? Ideally I'd rather not sell on eBay because it's a big 'n' bulky multimedia one and I imagine postage & insurance would be costly but can check out if people feel this is my only/best option?

    Would love feedback,
    Kaz.

    €150-200 perhaps? model no.? processor? Ram?graphics card? just a ball park figure but if its over heating and not fully functioning you might get that price I reckon.

    You could try selling here on Boards.

    I for one would be very interested in the hard drive.

    Give us more info and we could give you a better idea.

    What OS are you trying to install ?

    If the drive is not formatted use a usb floppy to boot up and format the drive

    Remove the drive and put in a different laptop or in a usb external bay and copy the CD on to the drive.

    pot drive back in laptop and run setup

    ================================

    buy usb cd drive or buy inspiron drive on eBay

    it's difficult but just about possible to boot from a floppy and copy files from a 1Gb USB key - can't remember the link to the boot disk
