Dont know if this is the right forum - my apologies if it isnt

Basically I am looking for a recommendation on what type of digital camera to buy. My budget is only 200 - 250 euro.

Ideally it would be used for all round use

What other info can you give us... which is more important: size, style, quality, functionality etc?

right off the top of my head I'm going to say a Casio Exilim... you'd get (or at least I got) a very decent one for 250 not so long ago

    Size - nothing to massive
Qualit - of pictures? Well they would be transfered to pc
Functionality - take pictures, delete from memory, purge entire memory
    Style - meh doest matter

Basically I am just looking for a digital camera that I can carry with me, take pictures and transfer to pc

Fuji A500 - simple point & shoot camera, good picture quality (5 MP sensor which is more than adequate for everyday use) and it retails in the shops for around €200 (package deal, you'd get a 256MB card which stores around 100 images at the highest resolution, batteries, charger & case).

We really need more than that.

How big do you want to be able to print photos? Usual size, A3, A4 ?

Would it help if the camera was small enough to fit in your pocket?

    Is battery life/type important?

Well excuse the ignorance as I would necessarily know what questions are applicable

How big do you want to be able to print photos? Usual size only
Would it help if the camera was small enough to fit in your pocket - it would be handy
    Is battery life/type important? Yes

head to www.pixmania.com and have a look at what's available in your budget.
head to www.dpreview.com and see if they reviewed those cameras. Also www.dcresource.com (check out there buyers guide too).
Head into a real camera shop to get the look and feel of camera.
    Voila.
I like the look of the Panasonic cameras with Leica lenses and image stabilisation.

    How about the canon ixus65,

It's yours for €260 and I'll pay for shipping ,this is straight from the stockist ,not second hand .

Can i impose on this thread?

I'm also thinking about buying a digital camera, i'd like an SLR, i have a lovely minolta SLR which takes great photos but the film and developing just cost too much, i'd love to be able to use it all the time.

I have a Finepix 3300 digital at the mo but i'd like something with the same quality as an SLR, i have a few hundred to spend. Oh and to be honest i'd prefer to buy it in a shop not online but i'm open to suggestions.

    Any ideas?

Nikon D50 - around €750 in the shops for the kit, or else the Canon 350D which is about €850. Sony have a dSLR which is just out on the market & is effectively a Minolta (they bought the technology when Minolta went under) but it's around €1000. It will accept Minolta lenses though.

You might pick up something 2nd hand in the shops for around €500, or maybe less but the Nikon & Canon examples are good entry level dSLR cameras.

    Ninja Double-Threadjack (Sorry!)

Do people usually buy in shops rather than online for the after sales service, or just the convenience? (not needing a Credit card, not having to wait for delivery etc.) Because if the latter, then the D50 is available in Argos for €580, including the first kit lens... I'm just an idiot what knows nuffink about cameras, but I have been thinking about getting this and €580 for the D50 in Ireland seems a bit of a no-brainer. Is there any good reason not to buy from Argos? (That's not a rhetorical question by the way)

I guess buying in Argos is much the same as buying online, except you can return the good easier if prove faulty. Aftersales service would probably be the same (the bare minimum I would imagine). Seems a cheap price alright. How much more are these in Gunns etc?

Very much a non-issue on both counts. If something goes wrong with the camera, it'll be sent back to the manufacturer.. I bought my 20D from Germany and it went back to Canon UK as it would have if I bought it in a local shop. As for convenience, in my experience it's laughable to put the words "convenient" and "Irish shops" in the same sentence. If I went into any one of my local camera shops tomorrow and wanted to buy say a 5D it'd take anything up to a week to get it. If I bought one from Hong Kong through ebay, I'd have it in 3 days guaranteed (and about €1k cheaper).

Probably going to be ordering a 30D soon and there's no way I'd even think about getting it in Ireland.

Another attempted hi-jack here, and please excuse my ignorance. Is there any reason not to buy nikon re-conditioned cameras from e-bay? I've seen alot of them on ebay at very reasonable sale prices...

humm re conditioned...tis a gamble but as long as it has some sort of warrenty i cant see it being too much of an issue
